Hello world,

I have this idea for days about uploading sketches of my daily practicing. Please don't hesitate to help me with strong criticism or directions, useful links, hints etc.:o

At the moment, I am trying to improve my linear skills and anatomy knowledge. I would really like to be able to do smooth and valuable drawings.

Thank you

Frinthy

Hi, Frinthy, and welcome to WetCanvas and D&S!

These are very nice sketches, and you have a good sense of proportion. You've come to the right place for information, and I'm sure you'll get some good advice.

Have you considered cross-posting your sketches in The Figure forum? They might offer good critique, as well. :)

Hi, Frinthy, right now you are drawing using crosshatching, and a very good one. The palm is not only lines, it has volume and shapes, and it`s a very complicated subject. Maybe you could try with your own palm and practice under different light`s sources.

Good work!!

Frinthy:cool:

I've never studied anatomy in depth, but needed to study the human figure for an art program I took once. For my own reference, I've ended up with three books on anatomy: "Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist" by Stephen Rogers Peck, "An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists" by Fritz Schider, and my personal favorite and one of the most helpful for me, "Drawing Human Anatomy" by Giovanni Civardi. It has the most wonderful illustrations that I like to practice from, especially of hands and arms.

Have you got favorite books on anatomy?

Sketching anatomy (in fact, sketching in general) is always helpful and beneficial to the artist! You can never go wrong practicing and sketching and drawing each chance you get. I wish I had the perseverence to do more sketching. Doing sketches like these is doing a world of good. Keep it up! :)

Luicre - Thank you! I have been thinking about your idea and definitely start with my own palm. There is one more finger/hand sequence from the book, and then it's time I tried sketching real hands. angel:

Jenna - The only book I knew was this particular by Bridgman so it is my favourite at the moment :o it's good to hear about other good ones. I found the Giovanni Civardi book online at http://scr.bi/5CUZwd. Thank you

Sorry Frinthy, no online sketches. Only ones I have are posted in the D&S lessons threads and they are few so far. Having no talent, I've been extremely reluctant to put up my efforts at all. In fact, I lurked here for years! Finally realized it was the only way to learn so graduallly peeping out from my shell.

Luv your hands btw :)

Frinthy
06-11-2010, 04:02 AM
Grace - Thank you for lurking. :o I was taught that one without talent can get to the same level as the other with additional effort. What do you exactly mean by talent? Do you not see beautiful from ugly, do you not have a sense of proportion or maybe you are not driven to create? You must be driven since you are posting your drawings to WetCanvas Classroom.. I am very curious about how do you experience all this.

Any ideas how could I get my shadows and lines better?

Hi Frinthy,
I simply meant that I was not born with a talent in drawing. Many, many years ago when I was in school, art classes were only taught to those with talent, in fact I was drummed out of art class because I had none.:(
It is only recently, on Wet Canvas that I've come across the idea that art is a skill and therefore can be taught. Oh how I wish we had teachers like that. No point in crying over spilled milk, however, finally I am getting to indulge my desire to become a visual artist. :D

Your shading looks fine to me but there is a post in Class 8 on Light and Shade by idcrisis55, post #17, that has some excellent links in it as well as the class itself which is very informative.

It may help to give those a try:)

You make me want to go look at my old anatomy sketches and books:rolleyes: . I have been so caught up on full compositions that I had forgotten how wonderful it was to do studies! Your sketches are executed extremely well, and I thank you for doing this wonderful thread. My personal favorite to date is the one of your own hands. It shows a lot of your personal style and shading technique. But I will always be fond of the cross hatch studies. They bring back early memories of my own. I look forward to more!

Grace - It is a common problem when it comes to art. I know many people who were told the same things but anyone can see countless examples to contradict this sort of prejudice. Thank you for your advice. I saved those links and will read through the thread. In fact, the tree exercise is already among my sketches.

Luicre - Thank you, I'm glad you like the hands. There is more to come. ;)

Brenda - Thanks very much, it is great to have your compliment, especially that you are very experienced.

Frinthy your work on "Eclosion" piece is very nice. The sketching is done very well and the detail on the jointed legs shows all the technical skills you are perfecting. It is a very coveted quality that you have in you to hone the technical part of art and to also study to understand it. I was obsessed with that area in college and my professor wanted me to go into medical illustration. Nowadays there is the wonderful world of realism to pull us artists into also. Your observation and execution skills are very strong. I look forward to more.

I must ask this question out of mere curiosity. When doing your hands are you working from photos or life? They remind me of wonderfully rendered life drawings, but you must have one heck of a memory if you are doing it live and drawing at the same time.

Frinthy
06-14-2010, 04:51 AM

Wow... Very nice! All of the studies you have done are paying off. This is a wonderful life study. Great detail in the development of this sketch. Animal hands have always been my favorite thing to draw and this year I jumped it over to humans (from photos). This is one of the toughest and probably the most complained about areas of human anatomy to render, and you have done it justice! Those that can draw their own bodies or faces from life get my deepest admiration. I have trouble keeping the pose constant and most certainly would be in deep trouble if I attempted a detail sketch of my hand:( . I have used my hands as reference when doing animation type drawing but not in life drawing. In my opinion, you have achieved your goal of drawing and understanding the anatomy of hands. I thank you for this thread, because I had forgotten what a wonderful yet rewarding challenge hands are. I think my next piece is going to include at least one!

At the moment I would like to get clear lines or clear sketches. Lines like japanese or calligraphers, and hatches like Leonardo does... When I get to the shading my sketches start to get darker and messier and at the end some terrible mistakes happen as well, as I try to darker the image in unsatisfaction. What is the proper technique? Is there one at all? Please help

George Bridgman is an excellent resource to learn from, although he can be difficult to understand at times. Copying from his book is an excellent way to learn his techniques but drawing from life is so much more reliable and trains your hand/brain with practice at a much better rate and experience. I love reading his books!! Try his complete guide to drawing the human figure. It's awesome.

Hi, Frinthy, great sketches. I see you are having some troubles with vcrosshaching. It`s IMHO, a really hard techinque but very rewarding. You must to be careful at the beggining, maybe you could take a look at Old Masters`s drawings. You will see that there are some variety on crosshatching technique. Sometimes the lines are carefully drawn, sometimes they are more losser and curved.

Shearch at the web abd you will find interesting advices.

Wow your work is original and intriguing! Love the later updates from post 92 forward. Still trying to decipher one of the drawings in post 99 - The logo is for evil Elvis? Silver liver of the ____ logo? Google wasn't any help to me.

Artchrispy - thank you very much. Theologians. I had a different sentence and after changing some words I wrote it backwards. Not really sure what it connects to :)

Frinthy, glad to see you back. I really like all your work and I am intrigued by your head studies.

Are you practicing the heads and skulls after some book , like Loomis`s or after Orbik`s or Reilly`s notes?.

Dear Luicre

Thank you, it's nice to see you. I study anatomy from Bridgman at the moment.

Frinthy, I love your surreal abstract drawings.

And I love your last works , the woman sleeping has been done with such a sensitive use of the line. Beautiful!

Good line work, Frinthy! Just be carefull of foreheads, trying to avoid making them too rounded, that is what is in our mind but in real life is different.

If you have a chance, Tony Ryder`s book is a great book that deserves once, twice and more readings...

I love the center portrait on your post 114.

I agree with Luicre on the beauty of the line drawing of the sleeping woman. Perhaps you could be a bit more careful with the lines of the hand, in particular the thumb. It is a bit stronger that the rest and distracts from the delicacy of the face.

Okay this is it for now. The studies are on Bridgman references and a couple of life drawing sessions (the last one is my own legs). I'll try to draw some more legs this evening. :clear:

Hi Luicre, Yes from life, its a life drawing workshop the first session was two days ago. The tutor gave me some great advice: 'draw loosely from shoulder, as large scale as possible, even across two pages.. learn to be confident with your lines. You can draw on top of previous drawings, use different colours, experiment, let yourself go, mess around.'
