View Full Version : Need some help with this one

I painted this from a friend's photo. I changed one jacket color, and made the background less busy, but I think it needs something more and I'm stuck as to what that might be. Any and all suggestions, comments, and opinions are welcome. What I especially liked about it was the women's total concentration, although I do always like dogs too. I'm not averse to starting over. Arches CP, 8x11, W&N paints. Thanks in advance.

Great idea with the background.
I think you could work around the dogs with shadows etc to make them pop. Here's the picture adjusted but with no changes. Look below the dogs for shadows, contrast etc. You could also darken the colours on the dogs to bring them forward.

Thanks very much, Doug.
Since I posted the picture I've also added a little darker area behind the middle woman to provide greater contrast with her hair, darkened the jacket on the woman on the left, and given the jacket on the right a bit more detail. Will get to work on the dogs and their shadows ASAP.

Darkened the darks on the dogs, the clothing on the people, and adjusted the background a little. Put some slightly darker shadows under the dogs as well. I'm still not entirely happy with it, and I think I might try it again. Thanks again, Doug, for your help, it was much appreciated.

I think it would help if you unified the shadows under the dogs to make the legs clearer:

Your suggestions were really good, Doug ... I think it looks 100% better than the version I posted initially. I hope I've got it now, and again, many thanks.
