View Full Version : storybook - building a snowman

original sketch in watercolour - later cp was added to intensify areas
I've made several books for my grandson (now aged 2). This is from one I did for Christmas - and we had a white Christmas so the timing was perfect :)
I did the illustrations by hand in pencil, watercolour and coloured pencil, scanned them and then added the borders with Photoshop, taking the images into Publisher to finally put the book together and add text.
you can see a slideshow of the pages here (http://vivienb.blogspot.com/2009/11/sam-builds-snowman-slideshow-of.html)
oh - and the snowflakes that scatter the pages in the final book were cut out in an online programme and the text is done with a programme online that made a font from your handwriting.

This is great! I take it Mog is real and in your house? She's adorable. I love the story -- simple, well composed, well organized and true in the way those stories are. Putting in the cat's thoughts was a great touch. Sam must have been completely enchanted ... and unaware that out in the world, most mothers don't just create a perfectly good illustrated book out of nowhere made up just for them, where the main character has their name.
My grandson Gabriel might like this book. Your drawings are consistently charming, with just enough realism and just enough stylization to make sense.
I also followed your blog, belatedly realizing that was a Blogger site. I've got my art supply reviews site on Blogger too and it's a great free host. You've set up something beautiful on it, like your layout.

Thanks Robert and Debby :>)
Sam is my grandson - but yes Mog is their cat, she was inherited when they bought their house and they adore her. She's a sweetie.
Our cats are one tabby and one all black (who just cost a fortune at the vet today as he'd got an infected bite or something :>( and was feeling very sorry for himself )
I'm glad you liked the blog :)

here is a layout in publisher - the text and picture obviously don't match as I had to work out what text had to be printed where - it needed a mini booklet to work out for a non-mathematical mind like mine just what had to be opposite/on the back of what.!
(The blue lines are all the Publisher registration marks that don't print)

Lovely sketches, Vivien. Children will love to read the book and marvel at the sketches.

thank you all :)
He had this one last Christmas and luckily he loved it :)
I'm working on another one at the moment about seaside/Cornwall/holidays - using a lot of the paintings in the Canson book that has it's own thread here. I'm needing to work on some of him playing at the various venues.

Wow, Vivien, that is one great personal gift to give! He must've been happy. Storybooks are cool and getting a personalized one for christmas makes it even better. Lovely snowman!

That's a really charming little book and I have no doubt most 2 or 3 year olds would be so excited to have such a personalized book just for and about them! Sam is very lucky! And Robert is right, it will be years before he realizes that other kids grandma's don't do what you have done for him. He will always treasure your books!
Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing a bit of the "process" too.
