David, you did a very nice job of blending the sky colors on this. Sunsets are surprisingly difficult to do well. Since you asked for suggestions I would add that if I were doing this painting I probably would have put the light post at the 1/3 mark (left) rather than smack dab in the middle ... and might have added perhaps a couple of birds in flight (right) so that there would have been some suggestion of life, something more to engage the mind. But then, it's YOUR painting and perhaps you wanted the starkness.

Actually, I think it's nicely positioned where it is, just off-center. I get the painting. To me it's a painting about design and color, over an expression of realty. However, I do like the 'birds' idea, a much different emotional viewpoint, but it would be a great take on this set-up. And if that were done, the 1/3 position would be nice.

Beautiful color and I really love the simplicity of it.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to look and comment. For me this piece was all about the color blending. I used a canvas gel medium between the colors, really seemed to help. I'm not crazy about the rail under the light, but it was simple, I didn't want to take away from the shape of the streetlamp. I have to admit, not a lot of thought went into the composition, other than putting the lamp slightly off center.

I like this a lot but I do agree with Linda that I would have moved the light post slightly more off center.

No doubt where the focal point is! The color changes carries the eye throughut and back to the focal point. Very nice piece. Doris

Striking painting - this would go nicely in a very contemporary setting...
