View Full Version : A Collaborative Friendship Journal

I recently regained access to my computer after over a month's absence and I've been lurking in this new forum for the past few days. I'm thoroughly enjoying the variety of journals that have been posted here. Fantastic!

I'm part of a group of creative women in my area who formed roughly ten years ago after meeting at a week-long artist's retreat. There are about a dozen of us ranging from dabbling artists to well published authors and everything in between. Several years ago a member suggested that we each start a journal that would then be passed around to anyone who wanted to participate in the "journal exchange".

The idea was to exchange with someone else and while you work in theirs, they would work in yours. We did the exchange during various group gatherings we hold. It seems we mostly wound up making pages aimed at things we had in common with the person whose journal we exchanged with. They could be done in any media and in any way as none of like "rules" too much, ha ha, but as it turned out they were mostly done in collage.

It took us about a year for the exchange and they became keepsakes that I think each of us will treasure forever. I thought I'd share some of the pages in my book that resulted from this passing along of a journal among a bunch of women who love to create...

This is the envelope I keep mine in and used to pass it along to whoever I was exchanging journals with at the time:

This is the cover of my journal:

This is my opening page:

The next pages invite my friends to work in my journal:

This is where my friend's work begins. As I said we often chose a theme that reflected something we had in common with the journal owner. In this case she and I share the same first name and even it's less used spelling as well as a lot of other similarities, so she went with that:

And, now this is the next person's work who I exchanged journals with. She and I share almost the same birthday:

And another person's page and so on:

I hope you've enjoyed seeing this and maybe it will spread the idea of a shared journal, because it really is something wonderful to have. Of course it can be limited to only sketches, painting, etc. I'm sure others who might be interested in such a thing and are far more creative than I am will think up all sorts of neat ideas.

This is eerie. I can see the personality of your group in it -- the emotion, the intensity, the in-jokes. Wonderful concept and all of your partners really got into synch with you in it, maybe you all were in synch in the first place. I love your cover and the bag, the bag painting is gorgeous too.

Your friends are great artists in this style. I get lost even thinking about collage, never actually finished one.

Fantastic Judi! From the envelope to the end, this is a marvellous collaborative creation!! I love how you also kept bits of the original book too and worked it in to the theme.

Judi, I just love the idea of a shared journal. I might see if my friends want to try it!

Love all the different creations of your friends. What a wonderful group of artists you have surrounded yourself with. Is this an on-going project or was it just a one time deal???

This is so cool! I've heard of passing a painting around to complete it, but a whole journal is so much better. What fun! And what great memories!
