EP, these are so cool. I really like the little boxes, but that sometimes a picture has parts in another box. Looking forward to seeing more.

EP, these are fabulous compositional studies, as well as great linework practice. So clean and neat! Like Debby, I really enjoy the way you let some images extend across more than one box. Do you draw all the boxes in first, and then let the images flow through them or be contained in them?

Hi Ep; Love your ink sketches, so clean and fresh and you have been busy.
They are great. Good idea for a WDE Journal to keep them all together. Look forward to seeing more.

EP, this is gorgeous. I've seen these as you posted them but seeing it together like this is wonderful. Thank you! Just noticed you got the expression on the grumpy cat from the previous WDE so perfect!

NHyde, Debby, Jamie, viv, Robert, and Jake - thank you :)

Jamie - I believe it was your sketches and/or your challenge on the Scavenger Hunt back in 2007 to draw items inside boxes :)

I draw the boxes first, then figure out the ratio of boxes to photo references, and then try to work through them in order. The first time this happened by accident - I had two empty boxes but only one photo remaining. Since then I usually have two photos cross two boxes each weekend.

Cheers,

Excellent! I love how you got the expression on the goose. The cat's almost silhouetted and she was, that's really cool too. You convey so much with so few lines, it's wonderful the way you do these. Great layouts too!

Great sketches, EP! You've inspired me to try some line work. I've been taking figure drawings classes at college, but the instructor's approach there is no lines at all - all modeling and edges, not lines. Again, great work.

Wonderful! As always, you choose such interesting crops of every one of them. Big Ben came out so recognizable and so did Stonehenge. The likeness you got on Lin's son is great. Love the silly pig, the two-panel spread on the castle, the smiling knight. This one's great!

Wow! EP, these are fantastic. Somehow you manage to improve every single week even though you're already so brilliant at penwork. I like the bird over three panels, that one's tricky -- I was studying that reference today. I love the lighthouse. I love the way you simplified the mangroves. I love that coastline scene in two panels.

You're using confident, clean lines and getting tremendous accuracy with them. Concise as poetry, these ink drawings are inspirational.

Do you draw the squares before adding the drawings (whole page at once)

yes :)

robertsloan2
06-01-2010, 01:17 AM
Splendid! Once again, your values dance around the page, images move between squares, lines are elegant, everything's clear and recognizable and whether it's contour or shaded, detailed or simple, each element is a gorgeous little drawing in its own right. Well done!

Your compositions blow me away. I need to go back and try the kelp before the week ends.

These are your best yet! I love that little two-panel kitten, it's perfect. Everything is, from the Eiffel Tower to that fluffy little dog, the pastries, the bicycle, the bridge, that one poignant tulip. The layout is marvelous and within it every line is elegant. Nothing wasted, nothing confusing, everything in these pages is so perfect I'm awed.

Well done! I liked your style all along but sometimes I can see how much you've grown, this is one of those weeks.

EP, you have perfected your style and your format for doing these WDE Ink sketches. I always look forward to seeing what you have done. I'm several weeks behind in reviewing and commenting, so I truly had a feast for my eyes looking through your thread tonight.

I love so many of your images, but I have to comment on the leopard's feet - that image made me laugh when I saw the photo. I was wondering "did he skip the class in Leopard school where they discussed choosing thicker branches to stand on???" I love that you picked this detail out for one of your images to draw.

Very nice work!

Love it. You are really perfecting your individual style. I just love it when you cross over between the boxes with a single image. Your lines are so CLEAN! Very well controlled and executed. Hi Zenica,

The WDE stands for Weekend Drawing Event. It's held in the All Media Art Events forum (http://wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=133). Each weekend a member posts 16 copyright-free images we can draw and paint from. Then we post our results after 2 hours of work on our art. It's great fun.

aah a nib pen - what kind?

I used to quite like my Rotring drawing fountain pen - which is languishing somewhere in a drawer just now. I haven't used it for several years, maybe I should dig it out.

I agree you have very sure graphic lines.

It's a (red plastic) Pelikan fountain pen with the default/medium sized nib.
Like so: http://www.jetpens.com/product_info.php/products_id/5431

I wanted to buy a Lamy pen like Anita Davies uses and couldn't find one for sale so I bought this one. It's great and very sturdy. I did find and purchase a Lamy pen and it's wonderful, too :)

Hi EP! I agree with Robert. It's amazing how you choose just the right detail to "capture" the feeling of each photo. I just scrolled through several more weeks of your work and it is all so remarkable.

A few of my favorites are the pineapple crown from June 25th and the two birds that cross over two panels on July 2nd. I also love the 3 pears peeking out from behind the garden panel below.

Wow! Spectacular pages. I like the way the sign stretches across three panels. You caught the cat's sweet plaintive look. Excellent barn and gorgeous jonquil. I'm regretting I didn't do more of these now, maybe I'll catch up in the Catch Up thread on some of the flowers.

Oh wow! Every time you get even better. I'm amazed. Love the flowers, the pelicans, the faces, everything. You also reminded me I wanted to do the rooster while this one's still up. I can always get to it during the week.

Hello,
I like this style. It's very lively and conveys a feeling of glancing at things in a busy sourroundig, selectively focusing on some of them.

WOW EP, these are ALL fantastic. AGAIN such economy of line, that really draws you into the drawing and makes you "look" at each piece!!!!

PS> This may have been asked before (sorry if it has been!), but do you draw all the boxes in first, then draw the images in where ever they may fit, or is it designed and layed out before you start?????

Gentle Hugs, Stacey

Elegant as always. So cool the way you do these.

Stacey and Debby - thank you :)

Stacey - I draw the boxes first and then fill with the images. The first time I drew and image across two boxes was by accident - I drew one too many boxes so I decided to draw one image across two boxes. People seemed to like it. Now I draw as many boxes and whichever size and orientation I find pleasing, and then figure out how many I have on a page for 8 ref images, and then figure out which can be combined for one image.

Here's the WDE sketches from the Oct. 8 WDE hosted by artastic (Bonnie from Saskatchewan.)

I realllllly like the right hand page - all the architecture over a number of boxes is so interesting - is that phone boxes in the middle? (the shape and little squares reminds me of the old telephone booths you used to see but alas now due to vandals we have characterless squares with perspex windows......!)

EP - It is fun to see some of these that I missed. My favorites are usually the images that you continue from one box to another. Always love your ability to take a complex reference and capture its essence with lines.

Wow! These are fantastic. I love your crazy crops - just the knee of the skeleton, the tot in costume split into two panels... these rock. Gorgeous as always with just that little edge of growth again. You're getting smoother textures with the horizontal line shading, I've noticed. Your value areas are very sleek and graphic.

These are indeed excellent! This is kind of fractal, the little images working on their own and as part of the whole page.

When I was doing regular journaling, I used to do some pages like these, but usually with only one image per box - spreading over a number of boxes is way more effective, I shall steal this idea when I next feel the urge to get journaling again. Thanks.
