I finally took the plunge - I always loved the look of a knife painting and finally I gave it a try. I found it interesting, and I learned quite a bit. I think I will do others - but I think I will need to add a medium to the acrylics to make them thicker. Or maybe switch to the heavy body ones. Most of what I found as demo & instruction showed knife work with oils, which have a heavier body to them -- makes more texture & stroke work. But I did like doing this. Just a simple scene as I didn't want to fuss too much, and perhaps not the best of compositions, but again, this was a study. This is 8x10 acrylic on stretched canvas. Thanks for looking - Nan

Really nice scene here. I always love the effect that knife painting can achieve with the branches of trees. This looks great.

Did you go through heaps more paint than usual? (I've never done a knife painting before). Did you use a brush at all?

I have never done a knife painting. This looks very well done for a first attempt.

That's excellent. I'd be happy if my first attempt at a new technique came out that well.

Thank you all for your kind words. I enjoyed doing this painting, and it was a lot of fun. This painting is smaller (8x10) and took me about 3 hours total to do. That includes doing the gallery edges where I wore a fair amount of paint. :) I think a larger painting would be more of a challenge, especially with acrylics that dry quickly.

Nai - I used no brushes on this, only the knife. And I did use more paint, but not what I would say was a tremendous amount more. The knife work allows for more texture to be added, which will use more paint.

I think it looks wonderful and the scene lent itself beautifully to knifework, the texture is so well done with the knife which is hard to do with acrylics unless you have heavy body ones.
