WDE 26th - 28th March

Images from Andalucia

I didn't realise how difficult it would be to select just sixteen images, agonising decisions!

I can cheat a little by including the image in the WDE Invitation. The incredible Mesquita at Cordoba is a must see on any visit to the area.

Please wait until all are uploaded before commenting - thank you.

You have 30 minutes to make your choice and choose your materials - you may use any medium.

For the next two hours, just go for it……then STOP!, scan or photograph your work and post it in your own new thread with your title, beginning with WDE, plus date, plus title.

When you introduce your work, please add a description of size, medium, support (paper, canvas etc) and time taken.
If your work is digital, we'd appreciate a description of whether it's freehand drawing/painting, manipulated image or done using the filters available in some programmes - you could also say which programme you've used. All are acceptable but we like to know the "hows, whys and wherefores"!! Some of us may want to try it.

Use WIP for any work in progress at the 2 hour mark, and MI for multiple images if other works are to be added before the following Monday.

To avoid forum flooding, please put all of your work during the weekend, for the current WDE, into a single thread: multiple threads will be merged! From the following TUESDAY, you may open a new thread for later work.

You have the whole week to participate - until the next WDE starts (usually Friday). If you finish a piece after that time, we now run a 'Catch-up' thread in the forum each month where you can post any WDE not completed in its allotted week .... it's a sticky near the top of the forum page.

After posting your contribution, please view others’ entries and comment and encourage when you can. Unless requested, please refrain from critiquing.

I've added a challenge at the end of the images. Right, here goes....

This cannot be missed out. The spectacular Alhambra Palace in Granada

A sample of the astonishing Moorish decoration inside the Alhambra

Bunuel made a very famous film 'Un Chien Andalou', here's the original...

In the interests of political balance here's 'Un Chat Andalou'..

In the heart of Andalucia, Landscape at Ribera Baja, Alcala la Real in the background

Me sketching on the roof at Casas Nuevas

The Andalucian traveller..

Alison got to practice her Spanish with this olive farmer at Ribera Baja

Pomegranate trees and La Fortaleza at Alcala la Real

Two images of a flamenco troupe in Cordoba, these guys were superb

Tree roots in Sevilla

Pastry owls, Sevilla

In the fabulously beautiful gardens of the Alcazar, Sevilla

And finally Alison, the complete Andalucian tourist

As a challenge I suggest.....

Study the image of the Moorish decoration from the Alhambra. Make a calligraphic fantasy based on the rhythms and shapes you see there.

I hope these images inspire you! I am really looking forward to seeing the work you all produce.

Have fun!

The site only allows 15 images at a time. Here's a last one for the flower specialist (or, of course, anyone else!). This was in the wonderful Alcazar gardens in Sevilla.....

Good Morning Harry... :wave:Paints are out and the coffee pot is minus one cup.

Spain looks wonderfully warm and inviting. There are a few photos that really caught my eye right off. I think I'm ready..

Thanks so much for hosting.

Great pictures Harry I hope I ll have time for more than one as you say it is difficult to choose to keep only 16 but then it is still dificult to choose within the16

Hey Harry, what would you consider a calligraphic fantasy? I'm afraid I don't know what that is. :)

03-26-2010, 10:57 AM
Beautiful photos! I'm not sure whether to attempt architecture or go for Un Chat Andalou...

Thanks for taking us on holiday to Spain with you. I rocognise the white walls and acrhcitecture in the one where you are painting. I have only been once when I stayed at a flat belonging to my Ex husbands Aunt at La Siesta Nr Torreviejca. We didn't have a car as we flew (and I hated it - too much fuss and bother and way to cramped - give me a ferry any day). so we were unable to get around and enjoy the beautiful landscapes... so thanks for sharing.

ve taken a few but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do much as I have a crazy hectic weekend. My son is in a drama competiton with his play tonight (All England Drama Festival - Warwickshire heat) and I'm covereing the event for radio and have to move all his stage set back and forth too. Tomorrow I have to edit all the sound bites and Sunday I'm recording shows all day. By the evenings I'll probably be too pooped as I've only just got back on my feet after weeks of being knocked flat by health issues....

I'll try though, as always.

Harry as much as I admire Dali I prefer your version od Le Chein Andalou... I can't bear the tgought of razor blades and eyes.. that film is NOT one of Dali's best moments imo.

Sounds like a tight schedule, Lin!
Will we be able to hear you sound productions...if so, where?

Perhaps you could squeeze in a teeny sketch somewhere, or a quick bit of Moorish calligraphy? Go on, go on, go on,go on.....(etc)

wonderful images, not so sure about the challenge tho, wonder where my imagination went!

I think I will be joining this challenge!

It would be my first time joining a challenge, so I hope I do everything right!

Thanks so much for the lovely images! I can't wait to get started. I will hopefully post a work in progress tomorrow!

Take care,

Great photos Harry. A lovely reminder of a similar trip through Andalucia. Not sure what Calligraphic fantasy means, but probably better I don't...so lets see what happens.

03-26-2010, 05:35 PM
Beth...that's fantastically calligraphic!

what I mean is taking off on that design. I guess you could copy the design, do a drawing of it and that would suit some of our very precise and accurate colleagues. If I were to use that as a reference I think it would be more a case of taking one or two shapes from the design and repeating them, building on them....developing them in some way.

I've had a very full day today, but I'll try to post an example of what I mean tomorrow.

Nice to see so many people interested though!

See Maureen's (Charlie's Mum's) post 'Moorish panel - with apologies'...a terrific example of what I mean.

Thanks, Harry! :p

I'm afraid me and cllligraphy dont' mix.. I failed 3 of my O levels as the writing was so bad they didn't even mark them lol so my attempts at Calligraphy have so fair been just as bad!

A good thing is the interviews needed hardly ANY edditing  that's the joy of talking to theatricals I guess. Anyway... I have this evening to try and do something. There is one I really want to paint but won't have chance to get paint out this weekend.

As to my recordings they are on a local radio station in Nuneaton going out on 1386AM so it depends how far the signal goes and where you live. As our studios are in the local hospital th and due to the licencing costs, as a charity internet streaming is not atm feasible. I dont' have a U-tube account. i was going to make a Myspace Music I could upload interviews and things but never got round to it. The show goes out on tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3pm However as I'm off down to Essex on Tuesday I have to go in and record it and a couple of other shows for while I'm away Sunday. The one I want to paint I will save for later.....

03-28-2010, 09:22 PM
Fabulous images!

03-29-2010, 05:56 PM
Thanks for the information, Lin. I'll see if I can catch 1386 tomorrow. I'm in the East midlands so it might be possible.

Well despite a totally mad weekend I managed to do one which I shall post now. I snagged 4 altogether that I liked.. have rellies coming up over the holiday and I wanted to paint these so I'll have to post them later in the Catchup.
