I should have done a landscape with this, but I gave in to my comfortable temptation zone.

About 45 minutes, started in Painter then some detailing in photoshop. Hand drawn. Comment + Critique are always appreciated. I'm trying to turn my paintings from "sloppy" to "loose".

Hi osmus, nice image.

I'm curious--can you translate the bolded part? How is something that is manipulated in Painter and Photoshop "Hand drawn"?

I certainly like the brown and white palette.

Thanks, Celeste.

To answer your question-

Using my hand, I picked up an instrument called a stylus, looks like a pen. I then applied the stylus to it's pad, creating strokes and marks the same way I would with real paint. It's pressure sensitive and amazingly accurate.

The word manipulation suggests I took the photo and played with the file applying filters and such, which is not the case here. I created a new document next to the photo and did a preliminary drawing and painted on top of it, just like I would in oils, using the photo as the reference. You can tell because some of my angles are off, the nose is a bit long and the tilt of her head is pulled down and to the left. I rushed the drawing phase too much.

To me, digital art is simply another medium. The instrument is my hand, just like someone using real paint. That is how it can be described as "hand drawn".

Nicely done, Adam.
Took a look at your website (well worth a visit, everybody). Are the images there digital?

Beautiful work Adan. You captured her nicely...btw...it takes someone who Digital Paints to truly understand how it is done. I am one of those:D

Great job!! ~!~Crowie

Thanks all!

123Harry- the work on my website is a mix of traditional and digital. Many of the portraits are in oils, one of them is acrylics.

Success here, I think- beautifully loose and expressive.

Ok I'm going to say it .... BEAUTIFUL PAINTING ... it may be done with a digital program but it is done stroke by stroke just the same as if one held a brush in hand and dipped it into that pot of paint :D

Adam,
It exceptionally good. At first glance I thought you manipulated the photo, but learned later it was hand made. I like the colors you used, and the focus of interest is well defined.

thanks all, I am glad you like it. I think Painter may become part of my workflow more and more instead of just photoshop. If only it weren't so glitchy.

The likeness could be better though, my angles are off! Next time I will try harder.

beautifully done, I understand the digital paintings and marvel at the work, for me it takes so long (tho I do not have a stylus and only have used a mouse)
to me it is quicker to paint, but I marvel at anyones ability to capture this digitally
