View Full Version : WEP Duchess 2/26 Finished

Hey All... This is the first animal I have ever attempted.. I have shied away from doing them.. ::sigh:: Hard to get the look and all. So.. This time I decided I would go for it.. The pretty highlights and sparkles I will put in in about two weeks.. (oils do have draw backs ya know)
Poor Duchess... I decided she would have an antique look about her.. The background is a really dark Quinacridone violet.. It just doesn't want to show up in the pic, she just fairly glows within the color.

C & C Please... They are appreciated.

9 x 12 1st I under painted with acrylics.. Then I used q-tips and painted her with WM Oils. (Hubby said I cheated.. so this is my confession)

The under painting...

The Finish piece.. Well minus the sparkles..

What a cute little doggie! You did it! :)

You did it! Now aren't you proud of yourself! You should be!
The plunge of going public is scary-but you have inspired me to jump in.
I am sure I am quite older than you, and if you can do it, - well I'll hold my nose and dive in. Now you have a wonderful day, knowing you inspired another painter to stretch the comfort zone. Look for my wip in a day or two.

Thanks for the comments.. and kind words. I was debating just leaving the painting without the highlights, because I didn't want to ruin the look.. But If I did one.. I can do another, Right? So next week I'll put Duchess on the easel and finish it.

Thanks babysmama... I know you can do it... LOL.. I have to admit.. I'm pretty close to 60 ;-) I am way older than dirt.. I invented dirt..
Can't wait to see your stuff!. Thats what I love about this place. All different walks of life.. age.. culture.. levels of ability.. it doesn't matter.. I've learned so much from example and the kind encouragement that everyone offers here. I don't think I would ever be afraid to post anything here. Hee.. Hee.. you should see the attempt at water color I just posted.

Nice work on this!!! Animals are not easy, especially with white fur.

Thanks Joan.. Artistica

not sure how this could be cheating!
I used Q-Tips instead of a brush.. Hubby didn't think it was quite fair...

My idea is, whatever works is the perfect tool to achieve what you want to convey. This is a wonderful looking dog. It is hard to think it really is your first.
Great job. Looking forward to the finish is a couple of weeks when the undercoat dries.

p.s. some of us are older than you, and I still consider myself if not young, certainly not old...but getting there cheerfully.

Thanks Paula,

To me art is an extension of self. So, like you, anything that works fair game. Hubby had the issue with the q-tips.. (lol..) He insisted that I "cheated." I laughingly put it in the post to appease him.

Ah.. Sorry if I insinuated anyone was "old". I was teasing with babysmama about her comment. You are quite correct that its a state of mind. Age truly means nothing.

As for painting animals.. many years ago I did landscape, still life, and abstract. Never animals or people. I quit being an artist 32 years ago, due to life threatening allergies. I was crushed so I just quit all art. Now the WM Oils with a limited palette allow me to paint again. Saw Duchess pic and figured I would try. I was really excited about finishing it as it really did not look to bad.
