MY COMMENTS:
This is today's work. Unfortunately it looks better on the screen than in real life! That doesn't happen often....anyway, the real one looks pretty monochromatic (i.e., a bit flat) to me & I want to add in some other colors to bring it more to life. But I'm not sure what colors, or where. Any opinions welcomed!

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
How can I liven this up a bit? Also, here's the reference photo, if that helps. I didn't want to put them in as much shadow as they really are.

in the photo the shadow was the best actor.

coming along nicely .. Sandra Fletcher has some nice studies on swans .. you should do a seach and find them as they may help you see the colors you are looking for.

Jerry--thank you, I think you may be right (as usual). I'll go back tonight & take the plunge w/ some shadow shapes. (scared, but willing to try)

Wayne, I just looked through a TON of swan pictures from the past threads, thanks for your suggestion. I haven't been here that long & hadn't realized what a popular subject they are! It's been very helpful, thanks.

Wayne's advice was excellent....
A suggestion...: incorporate more golds, ochre's and burnt sienna into your backround;...and paint those gorgeous shadows(soft edged) onto your swans:).....Then, you might incorporate some subtle yellows and oranges as reflected light onto the white areas of those swans. And,..since you're asking,...perhaps more variation and contrast of tones in the backround...
You've got a terrific start going here. I hope some of these suggestions help. Best Wishes,-S
