View Full Version : White Egret sketch

I'm thinking of including an image of an egret in an oil painting that I'm currently working on, but wanted to make a colour sketch in order to work a few things out first.
I'm using the Polychromos pencils.

Your 'sketch' is superb. The structure of the neck looks odd to my eyes, but it's a sketch and so can be corrected by the time you get to the painting stage with your oils.

Very nice indeed - like a cattle egret...

Ah yes I had trouble with that neck, hence the reason for the extra study. I'll do a few more sketches before doing anything more with paint. Thanks for the observation Del.
I believe that it's the Great White Egret, at least I hope so. The Cattle egrets have more yellow on the head I believe, but now you are giving me ideas...time to go check out the Image Gallery for Cattle Egrets.
Sorry that I forgot the size, it's 14x11" on Stonehenge paper.

Hi Susan ..
You've captured this Great White Egret very well .. especially the large trailing feet ..
I shouldn't worry over much about the neck .. check out photos of Grey or Great Blue Herons (same family as Egrets) .. they often have a peculiar "kink" in the neck .. its just one of their postures ..
You're quite correct in what you say about the differences between Great White & Cattle Egrets .. we're now starting to see both species in increasing numbers here in UK ..
Bye for now,

Thank you Kev, that is very kind.
Yes I did check out the Image Library and saved several images of the herons and egrets, thank goodness for all the generous artists who contribute. I'll be sure to add a few images of my own.

Yes, I hope so, but it will be awhile before that progresses, hope to work on the painting later this week.
In the meantime, I think that I'll start working on another egret/heron from the RIF.
