Hey all!
I wanted to contribute something that I started but is on hold. I have a couple of jobs to finish, so it may be a while before I get back to this, but I thought it belonged in this new forum.

COOOOOOOl!!! This looks like something out of a scifi movie, it's GREAT. You know I adore your sculptures to begin with, Heather. I love it even more when you do fantasy/scifi! Thanks for posting!!!

Tell me again what you sculpt in?

Oops, forgot that info,didn't I?
This is chavant,an oil based clay that never harden so It doesn't get fired. Molds must be made of it if you want it to become permanent. The cool part is that this can sit for a year and I can pick up where I left off. Not too messy to work with either.
This one is about 14 inches tall and12 inches long, which is a little bigger than I usually do. Trying to expand my comfort zone:)
Thanks, Amy-I'm glad you like it:D

This is quite stunning work! Do you do your own casting? Why no web-site? I'd like to see more.

Heather,

Is chavant anything like regular oil-base clay? I've worked with oil clay some and I always find it a bit too sticky for my liking. Too soft, too - way to easy to mess up something I spent hours working on. I'm always looking for new and useful sculpting compounds. :)

Hi Guy,
Thanks:D I don't do my own final casts, just transfer molds. I don't have enough experience molding to do final resins yet(mostly I don't have the patience).I have thought about a website someday, but since I can't even type without looking at my fingers, it isn't likely to happen anytime soon.I'm just getting around to business cards!
I post mostly in the sculpture forum, here are a few links if you aould like to look. This 'beast' was the first sculpt of this sort for me,and it was really fun. I am itching to get back to it.Here is what I usually do http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54493
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58003
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54488
There are a few more if you feel inclined to check them out-mostly animals.

Thanks again!

A very unique looking creature :D Great imagination you have :) Do you paint these? If so what do you use for paint?

 FABULOUS!!

Hi Amy,
Yes, Chavant is pretty typical, but I like to order the hard clay ( NSP HARD) because it can get great details in small scales. It isn't too mushy. There is an even harder clay I use called castilene you can check out at www.castilene.com. I love it.

Hi artdude, thanks:D
No, I have never painted one yet-I don't usually get to finished stage. I have several clays sitting around and only a few resins. My studio is where clay goes to die...

These are awesome Inkskin... do you do sketches before you start, or is it all instinctual? If you do do sketches, can we see some? I love the girl with the bird... and the dog is frighteningly good (I'd put it out front to scare trick or treaters and the mailman) please post more in here, your work is a natural... :D

Thanks Bobby and Surreal. Most of the time I have a lot of reference photos when I am doing animals and don't really draw them out. I worked up an initial sketch for the hawk girl a while back because it is a commission for someone who wanted some particulars. The 'beast' is sort of evolving as I go,I didn't really have a plan. A lot of times that is what slows me down though,so it's a habit I really want to develop. I also started a pirate girl recently, but have failed to draw a sketch for that as well. If that is considered fantasy I will post it here when I get it a little further along. If it doesn't belong in this forum it will be in sculpture anyway.

Thanks,

Heather

Each new work I see of yours, Healther, makes me once again long to go and get a box of clay, and see what I could do with it. I have never had any exposure to, acquaintance with, or instruction in, any type of sculpture, so have learned a lot just reading your threads... And you work in a size that I believe I could handle... Excellent beast... waiting to see more...

Thanks TeAnne and Jo:)

Jo,
Go ahead and pick up some clay! it is so much fun, and not very expensive. I use oil based clay because I don't like the mess and worry about drying out of wet clay, but that is fun too. I find that most people who have an eye for drawing really pick up sculpting very quickly.
Seriously, feel free to PM me if you have any questions. You can also get a LOT of info from the folks in the sculpture forum. There is a little bit of every kind of clay and sculpture going on in there.

This creature oozes with imagination. Your skill and ability to manipulate and create forms, is an inspiration. This thing looks like it might walk off. This is a very "believable" creation.

Inkskin,

Well, the greenery misses you in return. However, the weather and I are no longer speaking.

When you are creating your creatures do you give any thought to where they live and what their place is in a given environment? I totally see this beastie as part of a series of beasts from some untold world. I would buy one!

Good morning Heather

Soooo this is where you've been hiding these days!!! LOL I'm happy to see you've all made this forum such a lively place! Geesh, I get in here and I have trouble getting back out again there is so much to catch up on!
This guy is wonderful and believeable Heather  Tell me please, what tool are you using to create the skin texture? Does this beast have a name yet? It's kinda fun creating creatures out of your own mind.....then you can name them. Using latin words one could come up woth some cool ones. Great sculpt!

Unfortunately,I have not learned to be that disciplined yet-but I want to develop it. I have only recently been trying fantasy type creatures and have a lot of imagination to grow. I have been pretty pleased so far, though, and I think that I will try to expand on this idea some. Problem is I get too many things going at once and I get sidetracked. But all the nice comments are VERY encouraging.:D

Hi Di,
Yeah, I have been hanging out around here a lot-really inspiring folks in these parts too. I just started sculpting again this weekend.
For the skin texture I am just putting pressure on a needle tool I made and then wiping it down with lighter fluid. Fast lines so it doesn't look too planned out.Haven't even thought what to call it yet...

I'm glad you like it:D

Heather,........ just a moment I have to get up off the floor!

This is stunning work! I have wanted to do sculptures for a long time. I just never got around to anything concrete! (watch the puns) This oil base clay, does it ever harden? Can you fire it, or is it just a plyable clay for life? I would love to do some figures. I think my ability to draw people and to see them mentally from all sides makes for a good start to sculpt. This is something I could do I think. I would love the chance, anyway.

Your work is fantastic! (I think I saw the other figure you were talking about. Simply amazing!

I will be watching with eagle eyes on your work. Wouldn't miss it for the world!!!

Terry,
Thanks, I am pleased you like him.:)
Oil based clay never dries hard on its own, although it will loose a little bit of it's creaminess if left out for a couple of years. It is still perfectly workable but you will notice it crumbling slightly until it is worked warm. To make this permanent I would have to make a mold and then pour it in resin or whatever you like to use. I recently priced 3 sculpts to bronze...that will have to wait.
Looking at your drawing skill I would say you could easily pick up sculpting. It is such a mental massage for me,different than drawing.
If you are interested in oil clay, let me know I I will give you some info. I don't really use wet clay because I don't have the place to make that kind of mess, and I can let this sit out until I feel like working again.

Wow, vb tags and all sorts of things here. The opening beast of the sculpture reminded me of several creatures from nature in some sort of new genetic amalgamation of spiraling codes in a form of cosmic superimposition of quarkery imagery! Wonder what skin it will have in the final form? Be sure and post the result for us, please.
My camera is broke and my disks that pertain to uploading images are in default so it will be a while till i can produce my own fruit.
Looks like a different weave of threads here at wetcanvas, will be awhile before I adjust to the novelty.
well, later...

Hello,
Welcome to WC:D
I am embarrassed to ask, but what are vb tags? I have been thinking about the different animals I like, and this is what happened. I have been trying to figure it out, but I guess I have no idea what vb tags are.
I hope your camera is fixed soon so you can join in the posting too. You will find these folks so friendly and helpful.Glad you are here!

Hi Sassy and plump fairy,
No, I don't think it will die completely, I have it on my work table so I can dabble here and there when I get a chance. If It finishes eventually I will cast it.

Jana, here is a few pics of where I am with the head so far. I changed the ears and added the front tusks.

Well, Here he is, finished clay. This was a lot of fun to learn different textures. It is going on the shelf for now, but I was thinking of possibly adding a saddle and harness of some kind eventually if I get any free time. But, I am calling it done for now.
I sure don't know what I would call it,any ideas?

He's beautiful Inkskin..it's really got a life of its own. Thanks for the progress pics, I loved seeing this fella develope. Im curious as to whether you have ever considered sculpting for vinyl model kits...The detail on some of them is amazing, and I could be wrong but I thought there was a thriving "garage kit" industry, especially for the fantasy sci-fi markets.
Just a thought...(Plus then I'd have a chance to get one of your beasties! Heheh...)

Oh, he's MARVELOUS, Heather! He reminds me a bit of Elum, the beast Abe rides in the Oddworld games (only with four legs instead of two). I've loved watching you work on this guy. I dunno what to call him. A saddle would be fun, but you'd need some padding on top of those back bumps before you got ME on that beast! :)
