A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Fantasy/Sci-fi RPG Characters
Project Leader: DraigAthar
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Illustration
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Figure
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Since we now have a Fantasy/Scifi Forum, I thought we could use a Fantasy/Scifi Art Project, to celebrate! So this one is for all you Role Playing Gamers (RPG). Your task is to illustrate one or more character based on the character classes in your favorite RPG. If you're not familiar with RPGs but still want to participate in the project, I've included a few links to some of the character classes in the D&D world.

The idea here is not to copy another artist's interpretation of any given character class, but to illustrate it yourself based on the descriptions given in your favorite game. It can be a general representation of the entire character class, or a specific character (like, the one you play in your own game).

You can work in any medium, and create as many different characters as you like. I've indicated the primary subject as the figure, though I realize that for some character classes that may be a loose definition. But let's stick to the human-like characters as much as possible and leave the monsters for another project. :)

So, have fun and show us your characters!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=281)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Here is a link to the project page to get you started. (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=281)

Yay, it got approved! Well, I'm not sure how TWO project threads got started from this one project, but this is a test post to see which thread the comments will end up in. :)

Amy

p.s. ah it looks like there's only one thread again, some kindly moderator must have deleted the other one. Either that, or I was seeing double. ;)

Okay, I figured I'd better post something for this project, since I started it! I have several of these drawings I'll put up when I get around to it. They're character classes from a RPG a friend of mine is designing, called Altered World. This is a Sidhe, sort of like an elf I guess. I just did portrait drawings for the different classes. I started by doing skull diagrams of each, to try and work out the underlying differences between the 'races' in the game. It made for a neat exercise. Anyway, the Sidhe supposedly gather facial tattoos through their lives as a mark of rank and experience. So the more intricate the facial designs, the higher up the social ladder the Sidhe was.

More characters to follow. :)

My husband plays and has told me a lot about it-can I use his descriptions even though I don't play myself?

Heather,

Absolutely! I don't play, either! I just like all the neat characters in RPGs, they're so much fun to draw/sculpt/paint/whatever. So please, do join up, you don't have to be a gamer to be able to enjoy this project!!!

Well, I uploaded a few sketches that I did at the beginning of this year...back when I was still playing MMORPGs and Wetcanvas and drawing weren't taking up all my time.

Maybe this project will give me the incentive to finish them. I intended to do them as full color, group pieces.

Elankat, I like all of the progress images you uploaded, but this one is my favorite. There's a simple grace to this character that really appeals to me. Are you going to work any of them up beyond initial sketches? They're great!

Amy

p.s. we must have been posting at the same time - you answered my question already! :)

Here's another character from the Altered World universe, an Ork. I'd like to point out that it's a complete coincidence that he looks like Kurt Russell with fangs. I had no intention of drawing it that way, and didn't even notice until someone else pointed it out to me after I'd finished, LOL!

Thanks Amy. I love her too. She's one of the RPG characters that I have played the longest. There is one other that I've played longer. Silaine has a sort of hippy personality. She's graceful and beautiful, like all elves, but she's fiesty, flirty, and a bit silly. Oh, and she has a habit of smoking plants and eating mushrooms. She's very young and gregarious.

I really liked this sketch because I felt like it captured her personality. I also liked it because she's sexy and does NOT have big boobs (unlike a lot of fantasy illustrations). :D

Yet another portrait from Altered World. This is a Temmanvyr, a giant race with lots of pointy sticky-outie bits. :) I uploaded the skull diagram separately for this one.

Okay, this is the last Altered World character I'll upload, lol. This one I had a lot of fun with because I had to really work at inventing the skull diagram for this one. The Reez are a cat-like humanoid race, and I wanted to come up with a believable cross between human and feline. So here's what I did.

She is a Drow (Dark Elf) Sorceress from the AD&D roleplaying system. While playing Baldur's Gate I & II, I drew a couple of characters just for fun. This is one I made up but never played, since Drow are chaotic and our party was lawful/neutral.

I think its awesome that you take so much time in preparing the skulls for your beings, it really shows how much thought you put behind your creations, in my mind! I love looking at the faces, and then being able to see the skeletol make-up of that face. It really gives a uniqueness, and a sence of extra understanding to the creature you are trying to create. I should go back to doing that, creting the skulls and skeletons :o I've been slacking as I get older lols

I'm working on this sketch of Ezme, my main character from Baldur's Gate II, but it needs something. I am really bad at backgrounds but this just seems too empty. Any suggestions? BTW, I added the arrow after the scan. Don't know how I forgot that! I'll probably color it digitally when I finish, even though I'm still mad at Painter for killing my poor bard.

Thanks Heather. I've kept her hair (my favorite part) and changed her pose and gown a little. I thought the pose made her look to "hippy" and she's Avalonian, which means she should be tall and very slender. The intent was to do a drawing with her, Giliian and Cilas (who still has to be drawn). I drew Livia first, then decided that I wanted Gillian in that pose instead. I'll try and find the new Livia pose. It's in a pile of junk on my desk.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment on my "Dwarf". I am pleased you like him. Your comments are appreciated and are very encouraging! I have found this forum to be a great inspiration. Thanks again.

...wish my stuff was so clean, what were the actual measurements of this? did you scan this at 600 dpi or something...

I did the dwarf on 9"X12" Watercolor Paper. By the way it is murder on my ink pens. I scanned the finished inks at 300dpi and painted it in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. Then I saved the piece 550 or so pixels wide at 72 dpi. If I understand correctly, the "cleanness" is probably from the computer colors in RGB color mode.

was it your intention to make the metal this light, were you going for a sort of brass look? *breathe breathe* are the leggings also suppose to be metallic?

I was going for silver and copper. My inks were a little dark so I lightened the metal. Also my screen is calibrated for printed materials. So my computer is darker than most. I would probably scream (like a schoolgirl) if I saw what it looked like on your monitor. I'm not sure on the leggings, I guess they are what you want them to be.

Thanks for your reply Cision...

I meant the shin guards on the boots by "leggings"... anyway...

300dpi? ack... it must be huge, I had read on John Bolton's site that sometimes he scans his pencils at 600, then rescales to 300 for coloring... Anyway... I love this look, and only in the last month or so have I found stuff on the Net for it...

This was the first method I found...

Coloring on Photoshop (http://mysite.directlink.net/dynotaku/how2color/tutorial.htm)

And this was the second...

Second Tutorial on coloring (http://www.figma.com/drawing/howto/eloven/el_color_01.htm)

Which I must say, has been really much easier with PS7 then it was with 6, but your work seems to look almost hand painted, save for the highlights...

Once again, it's a great dwarf!

I havnt been around for the last few days, doing 2 peoples work
while my colleague is on holiday and Im just to tired to go online much. I want to do a comic book hero on that project, but havnt got round to it yet!
Also found a site called YOUDRAW.com where you have a tiny draw pad to try and post images. They want to publish a book, and Im so afraid to say it- but I'm hooked.
Anyway I love wet canvas so should be back to full posting power soon!

I FINALLY got my pc back :D and spent the morning coloring in my sketch of Ezme. I kind of rushed it but I'm swamped trying to get all my stuff set back up on the puter. Ezme was my half-elvenThief Bounty Hunter from Baldur's Gate II. She has some nifty abilities such as healing, trap setting and detecting, lock picking, pocket picking, and the ability to charm elementals. She can shoot anything she can see with that bow and is pretty good with a sword, too. And being half-elven, she has infravision which is handy for shooting things in the dark. Hope you like her.

Ok, I have to say I love this dwarf!!! The style is cool, the colouring makes it look like its watercolour and still wet... I love that. I like how you've mixed up the line wieghts, something my characters lack. The parchment paper is a nice tough too.
