View Full Version : First of the 2010 Polar Bear Series

I was very privileged this year to come into contact with a talented amateur photographer who is also a zoo keeper at the Toronto Zoo. She recently traveled up North and took an amazing collection of photos of polar bears in the summer tundra, which she has given me permission to use for reference material for paintings.
This is just the first of many to come this year of polar bears. It is a weird sized canvas, about 27.5X35.5 if I remember right (it was on sale probably because it is metric sizing), so it is quite large. It took up most of my painting time for the month of January. I hope you like it, and would appreciate any feed back you might have.

I like it too. I think you have done a terrific job. One suggestion is to have a bit more of the ground colour reflected in the bears coat on the belly area. I think this will help to ground the bear better.

Thanks Ray, EP, Carol, and Jan. I'm really excited to be unveiling this one tomorrow at a solo show that runs for the month.
Carol, I think you are right, but the varnish is on and no more time for adjustments on this one, but I will keep the suggestion in mind for the next ones. There will be at least three or four more.

I really like this but I do agree with Carol that the bear seems a bit under developed in this one. I was so surprised - perhaps it was haste for the show.

Awesome work. I am not sure if its the photo, but the bear's furriness doesn't come across. I'd like to see some more shine in the fur, which I think will be taken care of with Carol's suggestion.

The background is spectacular. Brilliant job!

Thank you everyone, I'm already looking forward to starting the next one. Thanks again for the suggestions. I probably was too rushed finishing this one, and with out a dead line on the next maybe even better results.

Wonderful, Sharon!!! So amazing!!

I think this is wonderful as well Sharon!! Only thing for me is that with this time of the season of a wet mucky tundra, I would think he would be a bit dirtier.
Still, think this is brilliant!

Kudos and Congrats! I like alot. And also think you could have pushed the bear a little further. But you have achieved a satisfying end result. So what else is there? :music: :wink2:
