View Full Version : Acrylic washes for underpainting

I'm wondering if I can paint acrylic gesso over my acrylic underpainting and is there any harm in using acrylic washes as an underpainting for oil in the first place?
I assume there's no problem but thought I'd double check.

No, but keep your paint thin. Thick acrylic paint will be difficult for oil paint to adhere to.

Thanks David. Yeah the acrylic is thinned right down.

Thanks Dana! Are you ever going to get that cat's paw out of the light socket? ;)

Tommy, would you rather have the other end of it? :D

Hi Tommy! Welcome to the forum! I use thined down acrylics mixed in with my gesso to prime and tone my canvas. I use thined down acrylics sometimes for an underpainting and for the initial drawing. Are you still working in colored pencil? I remember when I first started working in colored pencil you were one of the members that helped me to learn the medium.:)
Dana, I think I prefer the front end. :)

Hi Janet! Thanks and yeah I'm still doing pencil. I've had this big canvas sitting around her like forever so I wanted to try to paint something.
Hi Marie: I'll post my acrylic block-in today.
