Hi Scott

I had to download this so that I could see it all at once.

I have to preface my critique by saying that I have some kind of innate thing against close-ups of flowers in general and close-ups of flowers against a black background in particular.

With that disclosure, I think the drafting, light management, and brushwork are as good as can be.

For me however, the composition is not up the task of supporting those accomplishments, and I'm not getting a clear emotional story from the painting.

The issue for me might be that there seem to be two equally important objects here without a clearly defined star/supporting player relationship.

A very masterfully painted spray of Phalaenopsis! The full beauty of the flower is of course revealed in subtleties that are not displayed in a photographic technique. But using that approach it could hardly be better.

I knew it would be big....knew it would be beautiful.....
but didn't know that I would be taken quite so much...well yea...maybe...
I think the black background adds drama...and shows the spotlight effect so well...
your light is wonderful....I think you were indeed successful....yd

Beautiful flowers and impeccably painted, but I have to agree with Bill about the composition. The way the two flowers are arranged on the same plane and touching the edges of the canvas on either side, my eye just arcs across the picture plane.

As for a sense of depth with light and shadow: job well done!

Your dark background shows a tinge of deep blue on my screen, and this complements the blooms beautifully.

I think I would have preferred to the the spray painted diagonally............... but, of course you will add your signature to that space on the lower right, so that will balance the picture.

It's very pretty indeed. LIke the stark contrast of that black background.. could be an advertisement for cologne or ladies garments.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Interesting comments about the composition... I really see the bright white blossom on the right as the focal point. I'm also always puzzled by comments about emotion etc in paintings; not that they are wrong, I just don't know how to do that with inanimate objects, other than a judicious composition. I paint what I see.

This is very successful. You obviously got what you set out to get, and you communicated it perfectly. Isn't that most of the definition of a successful piece?

You have mastered your medium. The values here are spot on. I can't think of anything more to say or suggest.

I don't think it is necessary for every painting to be emotional, political or narrative. Sometimes just seeing what the artist wants us to see, including his mastery of technique, is enough,
