Ready set go, another week of masterpieces in progress!

Those of you that were following my Mexican Hat painting last week will be amused by this: the botany side of my brain woke up the artist side of my brain and said "Hey! Mexican Hats don't have hairy stems. You're thinking of Indian Blanket (Gaillardia)" So the artist side of me revised the painting accordingly. I'm posting it on a separate thread.

lolol, that's too funny, Linda. Strange how that happens, experienced it alot.

I got the painting bug! Still haven't finished the mule wrangler, but the other day I went to our local fair and got pics of the rodeo stock....., big bad bulls. Edited the pics Friday nite and started painting one yesterday, finished it after about 3 hours of off and on painting. It felt so good, came about excellently.

Here is K603, Gigabyte.......

Wow! love the rose! Looks like a photo on canvas paper. Now, that's one thing I have never tried lately, flowers. Maybe I can get the bug for that some day.

You know, it's really strange. When you look at a subject, it is overwhelming in its entirety, but if you take it one cm at a time, it becomes a possibility. Here I was thinking I can't do a rose, but when I look at yours, I now can see the individual colors and it might be do-able.

I was amazed by how easy a bull is compared to a horse. Nothing different, still mammals with the basic bone structure. But when doing it, all that went through my mind was bulked up muscles, macho. Maybe that helped, I don't know.

I have some good pics to still do, this big bad boy sparring with another, a group of several just standing there looking. There is nothing like being next to the pen eye-to-eye with these guys to see how powerful they really are. I had the camera stuck between the corral rungs. It could have gotten up close and personal really quick if you know what I mean.

Ok, so this is not acrylic (yet) but it's on my easel and i usually post in this forum so i thought I would share it. It's a collage piece. I just have the background but I will do a lot of acrylic painting on top, and probably some more collage elements. Are acrylic collages allowed in this forum, or do i have to go to the mixed media section? After that painting of the 3 children I wanted to something fun and loose, so I'm working on this. The second photo was my inspiration and reference.

Yeah, his dad is Whirlygig. Here is another with him in it, just started, don't recall who the black one is right now. There was a lot of T being exuded in that pen, lots of tension.

Here is the updated version of my collage. I work 3rd shift and snuck it into work to work on during my downtime. :) I think it worked well except I got sand all over when I was using it for texture, it took a bit to clean it up lol. As you can see, it now has acrylic paint.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

Thanks Kathie and Dee! The last two lines of the poem came to me as I worked on the bell. When I pulled up the complete poem, It's relevence was so clear. This bell has been ringing at Camp Kawanhee for 89 seasons. It has seen great friendships develop, tragic loss (fire with the death of one of the founding brothers) and the passing of wonderful people.

Kathy, this is really beginning to take shape. If you desire to do so later, it was very recognizable in just the monochrome and looked great even then. Thanks for th elink to the foundation.

Here is my new start.......a baby black baldy. I would say about half done. It will have 2 strands of barbed wire. If you will notice, I am avoiding any kind of background lately, buahahahaha......

Sue, love your little calf! And great work on the barbed wire...but I HATE the stuff! When I had Great Danes, I had one get sliced up terribly from it...horrible long gashes down her back! I just don't like the stuff.

timms, what a wonderful job on "Capes House"!!! Such a soft & cozy look about it!!!

Kathy, its coming along great!!!! I have no doubt you'll meet your deadline! One of the wonderful things about having an underpainting is that once that's in place the rest flows so much easier!

Jane, I didn't see "Surrealistic Mother Nature" as "disturbing"...but more a "blood as life-force" image. I really like it.

Anita, your portrait is coming along wonderfully!

After considerable thought...and lots of staring at the reference pic...I figured out how I would attempt the pine tassels!

Using a "so-so" liner brush, I started with quite a bright yellow-green mixture. It ended up being quite transparent so I wasn't real concerned about thin precise lines...just got the basic (slightly undersized) shapes of the tassels.

Then I kept going over the tassels with progressively less yellow, green (adding white instead).

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/19-Aug-2009/156775-Two_Bucks_013.JPG

I'll keep going over it using darker, more delicate & longer lines as I go! :smug:

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/19-Aug-2009/22615-barbedwire.jpg

Kathie, here is an enlargement of the barbed wire. It is just a series of backwards S's. Turn the canvas on its side and start at the top doing a mid tone backwards S, then another under it, then another, etc. Then you go back and do a darker tone on the right side of the S (the bottom of the 'wire'). Then go back and do a light tone on the left of the S (the top of the 'wire'). Then where one wire seems to cross over the other, there is a shadow so a stroke of darker tone there. Then you go back and put a real light highlight on the upper curve of each S. Follow that? lolol.

If need be, I could do a sorta tutorial on it. Would anyone be interested?

bigcatpawprints
08-20-2009, 01:57 PM
Kathy I am going to give you my honest opinion.....on 2 things.

Of course it is the way I see it.
Other members views could be different.
I know you want this to be perfect.........

First.
the sky.
Yes its is uneven. It looks like you tried to paint around the girl..sorry but you should of done the background first.
( the brush stokes are not in the same directions......look close to the head to your left )
Maybe you can put some sort of ''cache'' on the girl and try repainting the background a bit more opaque.

Second :
I know this girl has very dark skin.
I would cut off on the browns ( skirt ) and maybe darken the tree a bit to a grayish hue...to avoid lousing the color focus of her skin.

Hope this helps a bit.
Other than that........shes coming along fine.

Lucie

Foxyheart2002

Yikes, Kathie, the sky is a bit 'uneven' from the underpainting strokes. Perhaps throw in clouds to obscure the strokes? When it was just a monochrome, I did not notice the strokes at all, they blended well with the subject, but now that it is colored, they really show up. damn.

Here is my latest. I will not be defeated by backgrounds, so I will just leave them out for a while, lolol. Trying again with my mule wrangler. I have not destroyed the other one, I will finally get it 'right', but have moved on with a larger depiction of this young lady.

16x20, HB. (the painting is more of a yellowish rather than so reddish.)

OkeeKat
08-20-2009, 07:10 PM
Kathy, True the sky is uneven, Try a little scrumbling and dry brushing to get rid of the strokes, see if that helps.. is it still in the underpainting stage? were you going to do more layers of sky color on it, I would... A little thicher at first more white then blue mix, making a paler blue sky..brushing all going in same direction.. I like this so far.. is her headpiece going to stay greenish?? Kinda blending in with the trees.. I'd make it a different color.. but I know your not done.. just curious.

Anne, beautiful. Love it!!
Sue, great background so far.. you can do it.. I know you can.
Dee, looks great.. love your little tree!!

IMO...a hummer is happiest with a flower! :D

Thanks for the technical assist ladies. I've been working away at it, and it's getting better... I just need a bit more time (and a little less heat... my brush dried to the canvas tonight!!!!)

Dee - the tree is really coming along, I'm really impressed with your solution!

Yay Sue - I like that wrangler - I'm glad you are working with her again.

Mary - they are so sweet together - :)

Kathie... I agree that a hummer needs a flower to be truly happy!

Flowers are perfect! Just enough to get ht emessage, but sparse enough to not take away from the little bird. Very good!

Anne, I love your beach scene!

Good job, Mary. Always great to go back and work on old stuff when you have just a little more knowledge under your belt.

Dee, your deer look so round and the pine neeedles so flat. I think what they need is a lighter green in the middle of the bunches to show they come forward toward the viewer.....'rounded'.

Yep! That & I'm making some of the needles curve slightly (its hard to explain)...I'll take pics once the sun is up!

Kathie, those flowers are perfect!

Great tomatoes, Kathie!

Kathy, she is gonna be so great when you are done!! I have had that happen with the sky...and with grass before....even tho' I did it first...don't know what causes it to dry so uneven like that...can get very frustrating...when it starts of looking perfect...and then dries like that. In one of mine....there are two long streaks like the paint ran (how could it in impasto??) And so far I cannot get any paint to go over top and cover them....toooooo wierd!!

Sue....nice to see her back again!!! Yay for you!!

Anne, I like that!!

Dee....if you look closely at a southern pine...the needles are not all one length and there are different shades in them....that might help "fluff" them up some?

Mary, this is great!!

Dee, I know what you mean...so many that I would love to go back and tweak!!!

Kathie...agree with Sue...those are perfect!

Hi everyone !:)

wow.your paintings are all interesting and diverse !
An explosion of colors and style.
This is what makes these treads so addictive.

I gessoed my big 48 x 72 inch canvas..and did part of the background that will be MY painting...( for my wall )

I do not know yet if it will be a king cheetah or a regular one.

here was my inspiration photo

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/bcpp/IMG_1459.jpg

I know it's hard to see.but this a King cheetah ( stripes on the back ..very rare )

and here is my 48 x 72 inch canvas.......

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/bcpp/Dsc03249.jpg

I know it is not the same possiton..but I had 3 reference photos.and I played with the body movement...

I liked it better leaping off the ground than falling into it.
does that make sense ?

lol..

I never sell a re-gessoed canvas..and rather for it to go to waste....I am keeping this one..

Edit :
I forgot to say..no airbrush...all brush this time.

I wonder if it was caused by your canvas??? I had some canvas panels for the kids the did that...and I know it wasn't caused by runs. I always have them lay their canvases flat (as I do) when brushing on the background (sky, plain background...large area of color). I think there was something about the gesso that had been applied (we didn't add another layer of gesso). I can't remember the brand. Seems as though there was also a thread regarding this issue a while back.

Gonna wait till I am totally finished and try again....for right now, there is sooooooooooo much else to do, that the sky is the least of my worries... Plus I could always put on the sealer and then do another sky on top of that.

Probably could not tell you the brand of canvas this is on....

Lucie, this is great so far. love the background.. your edges look soo clean do you use friskit film over the cheatah area then remove it after background done??

Sue, know what you mean.. I usualy after sketching seal with pencil spray sealer.. so my pencil lines done smudge.. but then I lightly sand it as I think the paint wont lay right on the sealant.. and it wont, noticed in some spots on one occasion it was like watercolors painting over it.. didnt absorb right.. then added a few thicker paint layers in that area and did fine.. but now I make sure I only lightly spray and roughen it up after with fine sanding. and so far hasnt occured again, maybe the gesso they use was too slick.. I always regesso all of my canvas/hardboards/panels and sand some for smoother surfaces. not sure if thats what might have occured or not.. just a thought.

Almost done my little hummingbird.. need a title again.. used hovering for last hummingbird.
need to do some more tweeks on him and the flowers yet.
question.. where do you suggest I put my siggy?? in the flower corner or close to his tail.. I always leave alot of room for frames. /sigh didnt leave much margin by his tail though.

wow! Im a newbie and completely blown away by the work in here...I feel a bit shy about showing mine but I'm going to be brave and hope this will keep me motivated :)

Im new to acrylics but after some experimentation Ive decided that I love them and want to learn - Im more illustration than fine art, I have a story I want to illustrate.

Any advice/critique is greatly appreciated - I want to get better :)

Here are three photos from a WIP (lighting isnt too good - the last one is as it stands on my easel now (for the first photo my son decided he wanted a go...lol)

Hi Max! Welcome to our piece of WC!

I think your "storybook" style is quite enchanting! Your tree is wonderful! With a tree like that, its not hard to imagine you painting some very nice, more realistic landscapes!

There are artists of all levels and styles here...that's one of the most wonderful things about this place!

Can't wait to see more of your work.

Been working on Two Bucks...I've gone over the needles several times with different shades of light green. And now I think I need to put some more darks back in.....but the tassels seem to be fluffing up nicely.

Here's several pics showing what I did...

This last pic isn't quite THAT light, and washed-out looking IRL...my light source wasn't quite "right".

I'm going to put the darks back in on the shadowy sides of the tassels....then move on the the foreground.

Getting closer to DONE!

I am finished.....:)

But first.......

Dee..that is looking Great !

Kathie....Great job on the hummer..I could never paint that small.
..and yes I used tape to cover the cat while painting the background.
Here is what it looks like....it,s 48 inches wide.and semi-transparent.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/bcpp/DSC03250.jpg

Mary.......Beautiful..good work !

Max :.....hi.......verycool. I like the way your mind works.it is refreshing.:)

to all...keep up the good work

now mine.....
Don't laugh.
Its something I do not use often..(only a paint brush )..I painted this with a 2 inch brush. ( except for the spots )

lol.....Anyways it is for me.......personally.....
Was fun doing this I must admit...no taping..no waiting for the paint to dry..no masking..(except for the background ).....all freestyle. :)

4 feet x 6 feet.....
I know the face is off..but I like it this way....simple stokes......and there are no whiskers also..sort of naive ?

Needs a title though.....

Thanks for the lovely welcome, encouragement and comments :)

I dont feel qualified enough to say anything about the work on this thread other than its fantastic to see such talented artists with so many different approaches

AMuse, the story is about a spider called Boris who has to unwillingly move home.

This is where I got up to today - any advice/comments very welcome :)

Cute, Max. I like it. Gives me the story book feel. Don't know if you intended it or not, but the house is in awe, wide 'eyes' with its 'mouth' agape. Looks like it is looking at the spider like "Yikes." (which fits the look and feel of the kid and spider). The tree could also lend itself well to the same look with that hole above the branch, could put knots for 'eyes' above it to continue the feel.
