View Full Version : Puff-Cat drinking

Hi, I'm back again! I bought a little set (12) of Art Spectrum tonal grey pastels - 5 warm, 5 cool, a black and a white - And wanted to see what I could do with them. I've used the warm ones on Puff because of the black background, and apart from nose, ears, tongue and bowl and some AS Flinders Red Violet in his shadows they are all from the tonal set. On 8 x 10 Canson MiTientes smooth side.
So here is Puff - totally deaf and spoilt rotten!
I feel I could have put more reflection in the bench top, what d'ya reckon??
Any C&C greatly appreciated.

Love it. I think the reflection is fine. More if you want.

Yes... I like the subtle reflection as is.... This is just wonderfully done. The fur is very convincing and the light is handled beautifully.
love this kitty!

This is really wonderful, Jean! I love the way the light travels over Puff's back and highlights the way the fur lays on his body. The translucence of his ear is also very nicely done! He looks like he deserves to be a spoiled kitty.

Excellent work, Love the colors. James

 Just love the soft and subtle greys in the fur---pinks are espeacially beautiful. The gentle feeling is great, with the strong slanted-action line of the cats back to the nose in contrast with the hozritonal format. Its a winner to me!

Very fun! It's just a lovely painting of the fur - and textures.

I agree with the others. This needs no more for me. Very nice composition and technically very well done. Gotta love those grays!

Very nicely done!

Very good! I love the way you've done the fur and the shadows. You could add more reflection if you like but I don't think it needs it.

I think this is wonderfull..I'd leave it alone.

Really nice job. I'd like to see the pretty blue eyes in one too.

Puff Cat is stunning. Wouldn't change a thing. The fur is sooo believable, you just want to pet him.:thumbsup:

Oh he looks so sweet. I love the lighting and wonderful fur texture you achieved!

Goodness! Thank you everyone for all your lovely positive comments - I rather liked the sketch myself, and it only took about an hour.
Deborah, I just love what that grey set did here. I'll have to try the cool side of the box too.
Mudfish, Puff's eyes are not blue at all, they're a weird, pale lemon-yellow colour shading the pale green around the irises. Not your usual white, deaf, blue-eyed cat at all!
Not that he knows he's deaf, he talks all the time and has the most amazing vocal range of trills and carolling songs.
A strange, spoilt cat!
Thank you all again.

This is really lovely. I like the reflection as it is - very subtle. His ears are just wonderful.

Sounds like an interesting cat. Is that him in your avatar as well?
08-01-2009, 06:52 AM
No, Kenny, that was just one of the standard avatars here at WC. Puff is actually fluffier at the moment than in the painting - The original photo was taken in his summer coat!

I see. Thanks! No wonder he's called "Puff" :)
One of mine is "Dusty" cause that's what her coat looks like. :)

This is Puff in his winter finery!
His eyes look darker here than in real life.

Gorgeous cat and painting! I like your idea of using a limited number of pastels and it certainly worked well for you!

Really well done. It goes to show how a more tonal approach with just a hint of color can really work.

Terrific fur. I like how you have caught the light through the ears too.
