View Full Version : Looking West

My husband has been after me for years to do a portrait of him, and since I mostly do wildlife subjects it was challenge. I had him dress up in his range coat and cowboy hat and pose at one of our local historical site barns and took several reference photos to work from. For the painting I used Carré soft pastels and Conte pastels on Mi Tientes grey paper. It was a joy to do and he was very excited when his portrait took first place at our local art society show!

Very nice, Barbara! I love the details on the coat and the whole rugged feeling this has. Congratulations on a well-deserved award too!

Lucky girl! Co-operative, and a hunk! You're an all around winner.

Looks good but difficult to really tell with it that small. Maybe you could post a larger version?

Congratulations! Now you do portraits too!
Love how you caught him gazing at the 'wild' distance, it gives this portrait a special appeal.
Yes, do dare to show it bigger, it looks really good.

Thank you so much everyone! The original is 16 x 20, so I have taken another picture of it and hopefully this one will show more detail. My husband really enjoyed posing for it in his cowboy gear too - he rarely gets to wear that range coat here in Florida since it is so hot and humid.
