View Full Version : First pastels, first portraits

Hi everybody,
These were my first pastels, the ones that started it all, painted in a two day workshop with Terrianne Murray from Melbourne, Aust. Both were done from live models, the first, Ray, is a local shearer. The second, Ian, is my brother-in-law. Any comments/criticisms greatly appreciated.

Both painting on half sheet colourfix paper with art spectrum and w&n pastels. No pencils - I didn't have any then!

Thanks for looking,

Hello Jean, welcome to the pastel forums!

Two fine looking portraits that have a good 'presence' (if that word makes sense). I mean they have life and individuality. You clearly have experience in some other medium, these are very good for first pastels.

I get the impression that the shearer was painted in natural light, and the B-i-L in incandescent light. Both are lit in a very good way, and you have good observation skills.

One thing makes the workshop guy more interesting to look at, and that is the play between warm and cool colours used for building volume in his face. The other is more tonal in approach, with warms in both light and shadow.

Keep them coming, you're doing great!

Hi Jean, you did a gorgeous job with these portraits. You can definitely get a sense of the character of both of these guys. I really like the skin tones and hair on both of them - they are very different, but equally well done. Great job and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
