I am trying to finish this cat portrait and the background is giving me fits. I am trying to use Terry Ludwigs and Unisons to do something to this. I was going to have her against a wood wall but I just couldn't get it to look right, and now I will just be happy if it is cohesive and not all streaky. Any tips with the velour paper and backgrounds? Thanks so much!!!

Since the cat takes up the majority of the space, I would leave the background relatively plain and wouldn't try to define any detail. You may already be doing this, but if not, I would definitely use the sides of the pastel on velour to get some nice wide applications of color. But since you have already done the cat's fur, whiskers, etc., you won't want to redo the background at this stage. Nor do I think you need to - because the background works quite well, in my opinion. The colors work very well with the cat, with enough variety to give it interest!

Thanks Don, I will definitely be smoothing out the background and I am glad you like the colors. I like your idea of leaving it plain. Here is a latest update, I still don't know if I should have this be sideways or show her lying down. Here are both pictures for comparison.

This is weird. Trying to put the picture sideways. I will try it one more time...
