I am back to working my way through Louise Jackson's book and this is my latest attempt. Any thoughts on improvement are appreciated.

Norah, your version is lovely but it lacks the sparkle of the original. You need more depth in the colours and much deeper shadows to bring the flowers really to life. It's beautiful as far as you've gone but it's as if you havn't yet put in the final touches.

Following on from wht Joy said, I darkened your painting and upped the contrast in Psp to match the original.

A little more detail and intensity is all that is required.

I agree with previous remarks. Maybe painting needs more contrast, which in this case would be created by reseving more space on petals for lighter values and then darkening.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I need to get the supper on the table just now, but I will see what I can do with the painting tomorrow and will post the results (good or bad :) )

Norah, I agree--more intensity would help. Good work. I find painting florals very difficult.

Norah...IMHO you shouldn't try to hard to copy other works...but let your own style shine through.....this looks very good to me....stay with it. :)

Norah,

You're doing wonderfully with Louise's book... I got it out again the other day and have to revisit her... I haven't had much time for painting in the last few months - I only hope I'm a successful as you have been...

Great job !!

I agree with Hugh and I believe that you will find that if you use richer colors you will notice a big difference in your paintings.

Norah, both versions are quite lovely. I think the only thing missing in the first version was dark darks.

What is this book you're working from?

Hi Norah, I think you've done a great job on the wild roses. I have the same problem getting dark and light into my flowers and I find learning from books quite helpful. Keep it up, I'd love to see some more.

I like both versions! They have merit in their own right. I am partial to full color and high contrasts. I think you did a wonderful job of painting the roses and leaves.

Norah, you already have a lovely style. You should be very happy with the results.

It is good to get such a response to my posting - I appreciate your support and advice.

Nonamac - the book I am working from is "Painting Flowers in Watercolor with Louise Jackson". I have so many books on how to paint flowers in watercolour, I decided to do some of the exercises from a few of them. It is going to be interesting to try some of the different styles :)

  Very well done, Norah. I like your revised version. To me you have much more life in the flowers now and I like it a lot.

I feel for you!! That took a lot of courage! Turned out really nice! I'd add just a few dark spots (maybe purssian blue or indigo) between the leaves for depth.
