View Full Version : Outer Banks in June

I haven't posted anything in a while. Life put a roadblock in my way and I'm ready to start painting again. I will be on the Outer Banks of NC soon and was wondering if anyone knew of some good plein air spots for me to go to while there. My husband is encouraging me to take my pastel supplies and I think that is just what the doctor ordered!

Jockey's Ridge, although that is pretty windy. The site of the Wright Bros. first flight.

Several lighthouses ... loads of marsh and beach scenes south of Nags Head.

Thanks Kathryn. I figured I'd photograph some of those places because of the wind and after I posted this started thinking along the lines of places that mostly natives know about, not vacationers like me. I'll probably take photos in the am and paint on the deck in the early evenings. We do have a fab view of the sound where we are staying and I hope I can do it justice. Either way, my soul will be cleansed two-fold...my fav place on earth and my pastels. How's that for a get away?!!!

Just got back from Carolina Beach - townhouse right on the ocean - the sound of waves breaking on the beach all night long, wake up to beautiful sunrises right in bed ... yeah, that's a get-away :)

the Sound behind Whales Head has some beautiful sunsets! and you can always find some interesting shops to paint in Duck!

take the ferry to Ocracoke and see if you can't find the ponies :)

Thanks Kathryn and BlueFish. Ocracoke does have some beautiful spots and I had forgotten all about Whales Head Club. Great ideas. I'm psyched now and hope I can get at least some small daily paintings in to get me back in the swing of things.

Kathryn - Carolina beach, on the ocean...soundsl ike a dream. Here is what our view from the house we are staying in looks like. It sound side and hoping to do some plein air out there. This might provide me with some good basic color theory and practice!

It's been several years since we've been there, but I LOVE the Outer Banks. I second Kat's recommendation to go to Okracoke!!! Even after all this time, it's unforgettable.

Put my vote in for Okracoke too. Been 30 years since I was there but unforgettable.
