Hi all, this is a pastel portrait of one of my daughters. Enjoy doing portraits of all 3 of my girls. Such great work in this portrait forum!

Wow! What a beautiful painting. And, a beautiful daughter. This is very well done!

I adore pastel - that is gorgeous - and so is the girl!

Here's a quick study I made last weekend from life. 75% life size ceramic.
Doing some more quickies to try to loosen up my style.

Heidi, that's fabulous. Hope to see a pile more. How many hours does it take you to do a "quick study"?

Are you going to fire and then paint these?

Heidi Maiers
06-02-2009, 07:30 PM
Thanks Lawrence! This one was quick and dirty - about 10 hours, which is a nice change of pace from those commissions that drag on for months with change after change request. Yes, I molded this already (wet), so I can make copies if I want, but will also fire the originals in my kiln and apply a patina.

armosier, Heidi lovely pieces.

I tried reworking this one the other day. I do think it is better, but still wish I had improved it more.

Heidi, that sculpture is beautiful! She breathes life!

becca, from your other s-p's, perhaps the jaw is not as well developed in this one? Not sure as the angle is a difficult one to paint. However, I love the looseness of this one!

Barbie, what a charming pose and you've done quite nicely on the features. I think this one is a keeper. Everything works here!

Hi there, from a non-portrait person.

It was my good fortune today to meet Pat (Siberart) at her First Friday opening. Two words describe Pat: Charming and Talented. What a sweet person, and what lovely work she does in several media: watercolor, oils, colored pencil.

I also got to meet one of her models, little Alex, whose portait was on display and a WIP of which Pat posted in another thread here.

As a side note, Pat and I discovered that we had previously briefly corresponded when I sent an e-mail to ask how I could contribute a picture to the art auction that benefits our local public TV station. Turns out Pat is one of the coordinators, so that tells you a little more about her: not just a lovely person, but someone who is an asset to our Alaskan community. (I had one of those "duh" moments where I thought "Why is the name Pat Gillin familiar?".... thank goodness Pat's mind is sharp...)

Thank you, Dana, for tipping me off to Pat's show opening. I'm so happy I was able to make it and meet yet another wonderful WC member, especially one who is so near.

Yay! Glad you could meet up!

Dana Design

The first one is the original and the second one is the one I tweaked. I rounded the far cheek a bit and tweaked the eye on the right. The tear ducts should line up on an angle and I do believe that the closest eye is too angled up into the hat. Let's see if the upload works!

becca, not ever having seen you, the cheek may be too poofy but it rather matches the cheek on the right. If it's TOO poofy, a slight paring down would be in order but I do feel that the cheek line on the original is too severe. YMMV. Still a fascinating painting!

!becca
06-06-2009, 11:49 AM
Dana, thanks for your time and trouble, I think the cheek is too poofy in your version, but I see why it would seem that way to you. Also see the point on the eye. My problem with this was trying to figure out the light. It seems the main light source was from the right side (to the viewer) with a secondary source from the left. It just wasn't working so I took out the strong highlights and mostly tried to create soft light from the slightly above to the right. Also could not get a very good photo of this until this morning, maybe the cheeks look more balanced in this, I will look at the eye. It still isn't a great photo, but I think it is much better. Thanks again so much.

What a delightful and pleasant surprise to meet EJ. He is a charmer and most interesting. Thanks Dana for telling him about my show. My first ever time meeting a fellow Wet Canvas member.

New Sketch - on Canson 90# Drawing Paper - Image size approximate 8.5 x 11in. Used 2b mechanical pencil lead. Darkened in Auto Color in Photoshop cause lights showed up much lighter than in original. Scanned at 300 dpi in RGB - dropped to 150dpi - darkened after turning into Grayscale. I am still trying to get a good scan of graphite. This will be used for publicity over the web and in print - if client accepts. 1st one is the darkened one and then I went back to the drawing board and smudged some of the lights, gave her more shading on both sides of her nose and rescanned, but didn't darken,

Loke , i will try and explain as it is a bit of allsorts,

Watercolour paper
watercolour base skin tone , all over
Glasses arcylic
All heavy hightlights acrylic, eyes , mouth , ears, teeshirt
Pastel applied with the finger to adjust skin tone , i seem to be able to take the colour deeper and smoother but still keeping the youth skin softness

there you have it , i love sticking anything and everything together and seeing what comes out but in this case i think it worked

Thanks for looking

From the Monthly Portrait Challenge - Alice by William Merritt. I'm working to loosen up my style so this was a perfect practice subject. Done digitally in Painter 11. Original is approximately 1600 x 1300 pixels. This is done primarily with pastel brushes on basic paper. It is a single layer painted in the same manner as you would with any medium.

You mastered her so well, Jean. I tried her also.. sketched her with pencils first, oh she looked not like her at all so i 've forgotten about her. One i know.. she is so hard... and your is looking like herself... congratulation... very soft and sensitive work. I like it a lot.

Alfred, your guy is really a character... very good painting indeed.

Nice soft look Jean! Not sure I like her "floating" bodiless like that, but that's probably just me.

thanks Annie and Kenny for commenting and Kenny I was to lazy to do the clothing :D

Checking in a few pages into this month, so I've missed a lot, but wow -- what a lot of handsome portraits here!

Great work -- Jean, Alfred, Carl, Len, Mac & Harry!

Jean -- nice to see that Bouguereau (it is his, isn't it?)! Must be a task to render so finely in Painter. :D
Alfred -- nice bunch of seniors in your studio. I bet they would liven up a room together!
Carl -- Lovely painting. I also briefly visited your website & blog -- great work! Do you use a palette-knife a lot on your paintings?
Len -- she is lovely, and very nicely painted!
Mac -- Wow! You captured a sweet expression on this model. Good job! You are really on a roll these days!
Harry -- That is one BIG baby!! Looks like he crawled right up into my face!

I can post up my almost-finished charcoal portrait -- done with the four sessions with the live model, so if I do anymore, it will be using photo references. Hope it doesn't show up sideways again.... (if she does, can someone please fix it for me?)

Great job Lauren. You might take a second look at the shadow under her fingers - it appears a bit dark compared to the other shadows.

Thanks, Kenny!

Yes, I need to overall finalize the values. I just want to make sure all is okay to fix, as it will first need a coat of workable fixative to hold what's on there on -- most is done with vine charcoal on Ingres paper, and it lifts so easily if not fixed.

I also learned with my last charcoal portrait to read the instructions on the can before spraying. It says I need to shake the can for 3 minutes first!
When I didn't, I ended up with a rather stubbly surface to work on, and the last 'layer' was a bit rough looking. If anyone has more advice for using workable fixative, I'd love to hear it!

My best advice for using fixative (particularly if you are going to work on top of it -- which I rarely do) is -- yes be sure the can is shaken well. Make sure the nozzle is clear before using. Always spray an initial spray away from the artwork to clear the nozzle and any air/blobs/stuff. Best to do this outside and with no breeze, etc.

Then when you are ready to coat the artwork - again start the spray away from the art and then gently waft a cloud of the fixative over it and let it settle. Do this in several coats of very thin spray allowing a bit of time - a minute or so - to dry between coats.

This method seems to work well for my graphite and charcoal.
