View Full Version : Project Discussion: FND- Dramatic Lighting

Crias
08-23-2002, 07:58 PM
A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: FND- Dramatic Lighting
Project Leader: Crias
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 3
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Lighting and contrast lend depth perception and three dimensionality to our works of art. This weeks FND is focusing on dramatic contrasting lighting. Darkness and lack of light can sometimes alter how we think things should look, as parts of the picture melt into the background. The challenge for this week is to use the contrast in these images to forget what we think should be there and see what there is to be seen!

This FND will continue through the weekend, to enable the maximum number of participants. Chat will take place SATURDAY night.

I have posted 15 images on a web site that contain dramatic shadows and lighting, however you are welcome to choose your own photo too that shares in this type of dramatic light affect. Have fun and be sure and stop by in the chat room on Sat. night to discuss the project.

All mediums (including digital) are welcome!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=275)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

It should be coming up. It is from my computer. Are you having problems getting the project page to come up, or the image link?

Can you please tell me what it says when you try to go to the page? Does it say you can't link from a remote site (or something along those lines)? It is still coming up fine on my computer.

I will also try something else to solve the problem.

Sorry for the problems.

I went to the project page this morning (late again) but I can't see any of the images. The page comes up fine but the thumbnails aren't anywhere to be found. Have they been removed already?

Kitaye,

I am having problems with the images. Someone told me that they could not see them in netscape, but they came up fine in IE. If you have been trying to use netscape please try accessing the site in Internet Explorer. If I hear of more problems, I will post the images directly to this thread on my lunch. Sorry for all teh problems! *pulling hair out now*

And.. erm.. Hi everybody!

I'm new here... to the forum, to the projects, and to WC itself. This just looked like a fun place to test the waters, and I think I was right! I chose a reference photo from a photographer friend of mine. I'd admired this candle lit image for a long while, but felt like it was too ambitous a project for me to tackle, so this was a great excuse to experiment with it. It's not going so well results wise, but there are two progress images if you want to see me make mud out of watercolors! (it is a nude, and thats why I didnt link the image in this post)

Funny thing - my muddy experiment here isnt frustrating me nearly as much as it would have if I'd been doing this on my own. So thanks Crias!

Sekkie: Welcome to WC! And I'm soooo happy you chose an art event to make your first post dive... If I could suggest some colored pencils or pastels for those bright highlights... that is if your paper is forgiving... I love the torso, nice range of color, even if semi unintentional (don't say insanity, say ecclectic) keep working at it, it's worth saving :D

Hi Sekkie,

Welcome to WC and to your first weekend art event. You can enter as many images as you like. It's still not too late to begin a new piece. Everyone here is very supportive, as you've probably already found.

This is pretty good Bobby. I like both of them, I and I really like the colours of the High conrast version, but I find the green stripes in the high contrast to be rather distracting. In this version the colours aren't as strong but you still show off the lighting and the green stripes aren't as annoying. Sorry, I know I'm being picky.

Excellent work everyone and thank you SO much for participating in my FND! It didn't end up being a flop, which I thought it might be after all the problems, but I am glad so many chose to participate. Now you may all be wondering where my entries are for my own event, and I had planned to work on something, but then my dog got sick on Sat. and I didn't get the opportunity to get any art done over the weekend. She is doing better now, but I have two commisions due very soon (which take presidence), so guess I will have to completely just miss my own event. Oh well there's always next time (I have another "fun" theme in mind for the future.)

Once again thanks for participating!

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/275/progress/12324/tn_NegativeCandlelitNudePSP3.jpg

This is my current WIP version, digitized and made into a negative. I'm starting to doubt there will be a final! *grins* My first instincts on this piece were right, it's terribly ambitious! I usually lean more towards cool tones than the warms of the photo I chose (thus, I like the negative image better than the original). So before tackling something like this seriously I'd have to do some color studies. The lit candles are something I've never tried before, and I'm considering playing with some simple still life studies of candles just to see if i can capture the glow.

I thought you might get a kick out of the comments from some of my (usually) die-hard supporters. A gal-friend's response to the first two images was "You are EVIL! lawdy what on earth has that poor child given birth to? I don't want to know! OW!" She realized it was a candle in the next version. "OUCH my <censored> is on fire! You are EVIL, EVIL I say!" Then she started laughing too hard to breathe!

Another usually enthusiastic friend responded with a cautious "I'll have to think about this a while. But it's disturbing. That means its art, right?" Sure! Why not?! LOL.

And finally, bless his visionary mythic soul, my friend Sannion loved the whole set... he felt the model was overcoming a deep soul searing trauma, such as incest or rape, that she was wielding the smaller candle like a phallus or sword, a healing empowerment, a victory and claiming of power over that which had wounded her.

(Ok, I don't really see that either, but it did make me feel a lot better! *grins*)

This has been a blast! And I hope you all don't mind my self-indulgent blathering about my experimenting. It's great to be here!

I've just been going back over the final images in the gallery, and WOW it's so cool to see how different people see and express the lights and darks in the various images. Great job, all the way around  (i just love those little icons!) If I have time I'll comment on some individually, but things are a bit rushed 'round here tonight - so just consider yours my favorite. <grin>

Wonderful work Tigre....very dramatic lighting and I love the way the fur fades out of the picture. Beautiful cat too:clap:

I love this one. You captured a wonderful expression on the cat's face.

wow... there was such amazing work all through this project... sorry I didn't get back to this thread until now, just wanted to explain the name... can't remember who posted this question, and haven't the energy to go back and look it up... i know... lame excuse....

The name is Hounds because she was a member of one of my favourite bands, now defunct, called The Hounds of Heaven. It was just a quick name for the pic, and it stuck... I like it. It doesn't give everything away in the name like everything else I do... lol!
