Hello from a new member in Oregon,USA. I though that Id introduce my self since I intend to be a active particapent in this forum. Im a retired resort chef and have now a lot more time to persue my pasion for photography. I started out shotting in 35mm and black and white but have since switched over to Digital. Quite the learning curve but what a revelation. I love it. Anyway I would love to post some of my work as soon a I can figure out how to on this site. Looking forward to making new friends and gaining lots of helpfull knowledge and technics. Paul

Peb welcome aboard. Usually everyone introduces themselves in the wecome forum.
One of my favorite things to do here is to scan the "New Posts" (button at the top of this screen). Everything going on here comes through there. I enjoy reading about other art disciplines. I've learned about a lot of neat things: Etsy, Zazzle, blogging, image kind, encaustics, been inspired to give oil pastel's a try, am going to start experimenting with a three color limited palette. It's a great place to get critiques of your art from soft to hard. You get to choose.

Hi Paul, welcome!

I keep saying I'll setup a darkroom again one day, but I think I'm probably kidding myself. It's a mountain of effort to climb again compared to digital. I'll look forward to seeing your photos.

James.

Hello Hall, thanks for the welcome. Ive been on the site for about a week but when viewing new post ive never seen one post refering to photography??? I guess its not that popular a forum. Any way I also spend a lot of time on my art and work in a lot of different medias. I enjoy watercolor/colored pencil the most. Although I love challenging myself with new technics and art forms.

Hello James,
Thank you for the welcome. I understand your feelings for the darkroom. For many years I did all my own developing and printing in my own dark room. It all started when I returned to school for my assoc. in commercial art. I became interested in photography as sorce of reference material for my art work but developed into a love for the art form. Even while a 30 some year carrier as a resort chef I continued with a portable dark room for black and white work. I finally upgaded to digial after getting my firs computer. I too would like to return to my old darkroom and b&w but doesnt seem to practical anymore. Do they still make b&w film and chemicals to develope it???

Hi Mary,
Thanks for the welcome. I will try downloading some photos soon. Thankyou for viewing my web site and Im glad you were impressed. Ive only had it for a short while and still working on expanding my galleries. It took a while for me to figure out how to navigate it as im not a computer geek. Im old school and all this new tech is almost overwhelming (if you know what I mean). Anyway Ive veiwed your web site several times now and really like the animal photos. Did you travel to locations to get them or use a local zoo? It sure looks like you were on location. Great work. Paul

Sorry to disappoint you, Paul, my animals shots are from Zoos around the country, no exotic locations for me, as my husband and I are truck drivers by trade. We deliver Broadway shows to various cities throughout the US and I have the opportunity to visit the zoos. And thank you for the compliment.

Welcome from me, too! Happy to see new blood here.

Posting a photo is very simple. In the Reply Window (not the Quick Reply) above where you type, you will see a bunch of little icons. The one that looks like a picture http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-May-2009/17777-image_uploader_icon.gif is the one you want.

Click on that and a pop-up window opens (Step One, it says :D). You will see a "Browse" button. Click that to go to where you keep your pictures filed in your computer (in my case, "My Pictures"). Select the picture you want to upload, double-click on it (or click on the "Open" button at the bottom), and the location will be displayed in the little window. Click on the "Upload Image" button and you will see the picture you selected. If that is the correct picture, just click on it and the Uploader will insert your picture into your post. (ad all the little pop-up windows will disappear :D)

Here's an example using the Uploader ... there is text above and below the image...

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-May-2009/17777-gm-wc-DSC_3830.jpg

Using the Uploader, you can have your image inserted into your text where you want it. This also allows the image to show when we are replying to a post.

An alternative is the "Attachment" option. We tend to frown a bit on that one but other forums here use it extensively. What it does is adds your images to the very end of what you have posted. You don't see them when you preview your post and you can't have text after them. So, if you were attaching more than one image and you wanted to say what each was, you would not be able to "label" them with the images individually. It is very irritating.

I should also tell you we have image size restrictions here on WetCanvas. An image can be no more than 800 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. There is no maximum file size, apparently, but I usually try to keep it around 120kb, so the people still on dial-up have a fighting chance at seeing them. If you post an image that is larger than the maximum, WC will resize it for you - and it will not be as good in clarity and will look "soft". The site also softens pics, so it is recommended you sharpen your pictures a tad after you resize them.

Hope that all helps.

Now - show us some pics!!!

Cheers,
Sue

*************

Just so you can see the difference between the Uploader and the Attachment tools, the following pictures were done with the Attachment. I can't put any more text in after them, so I will have to say ahead of time what they are if I want to give an explanation about them ...

So ... #1 is the Black-capped Chickadee eating out of my hand #2 is a Ruby-crowned Kinglet in the rose bush, and #3 is a male American Goldfinch at my feeder ...

See what I mean??? Irritating, eh?

Sue, thank you very much for all the imformation. Now I think I can figure it out. But I think that Ill have to go into my editing program and see if I can figure out how to resize my photos. Im having a lot of trouble downloading some of them on to my artspan web site because they tell my they cant be larger then 4mb., I guess that means file size? I sure hope I can finally get this figured out. Thanks again, Paul

Hi Peb welcome to our corner. Introducing yourself in the pub was just the right thing to do here.
Yes 4mb is your file size. You will get it sorted out sooner or later ...
