This is a portrait commissioned for me to do from a lady who I met at one of my events, I had my Booth of paintings. This is of her Deceased Son, Michael. I do hope she likes it.
8x10" Staplebacked Canvas, painted on the sides so framing is optional.

hi, this portrait is beautiful, i've been experimenting with acrylics for a while, i notice how smooth your shading is, i have trouble doing that, do you use retarding mediums?
05-10-2009, 05:10 PM
It looks very natural. The skin, eyes, hair...fabulous!!

THank you Moretoit!!(Great name) No I dont use a medium other then water. I just keep working the colors till I get the tone I need, mixing lighter and lighter and work my way up from darks to light.
Hi Linda, thank you very much!!!
This is GREAT Kathie! Well done! The mom will be thrilled to have such a treasure.

Thank you Deb and Patti for your generous coments.
Patti, you might be right... I'm learning more and more as I do one.
Thanks for your support.

Kathie, your tutorial is spot on. I usually get hammered when I post pics in portraiture. Professional portrait artists believe that acrylics are far inferior to oils. I am delighted that you are handling acrylics so well. It gives me encouragement to continue my trek!

THank you Plastechie!!
I am very disappointed in the portriature thread, I get more replies and comments here as always then there. its almost as if they don't seem to care, might be right about the acrylics, but still a portraits a portrait.
I know I'm still learning, I am sure you can do just as well. I struggled on my first few and still take my time.. this one took me approx 35 hrs to complete, started about 10 days ago.

wonderful work Kathie - great likeness and a really challenging ref.
this will mean the world to his mom as you have captured life in his eyes.
what a tragedy to have lost someone so young...he looks like he was wearing his wedding outfit.

this is nothing short of brilliant, thankyou so much for the WIP, very helpful to see how a successful portrait artist works.
I'm full of admiration.

Kathie you have done a remarkable job on this young man. I don't care what medium you used, you have a winner in this one. Just keep doing what you do and keep having fun..........Lenore

You've done a wonderful job with this and I am sure it will be treasured! The portraiture forum is a little "stiff". For some reason this forum is so supportive and allows us all to develop and grow as we go. This is one of your best portraits. I know it's so much easier when you have a single focus rather than trying to get multiple folks to all come out ok in one painting! I usually get two right and one just doesn't make it! Good work here.
