View Full Version : New to Acrylics

I've been painting in pastels for the last couple of years and oil before that. This is my first attempt at acrylics. This painting was done much more loosely than I am used to, but I really enjoyed that. It's 12x16 on watercolor paper. Tell me what you think please. C&C's.

Well I'd say Bravo! This painting has a marvellous feel of wild abandon. Wonderful colours & lovely loose brushstrokes. My only nit-pick is the dark area at the top. For me, it's a dark cloud threatening to spoil the party.

New to acrylics myself but just wanted to say I really like this and the loose style.

Great colors and style...the flowers stand out nicely.

I agree with Coralie, looks great except for the green at the top.

I love the seance of movement that it has as if rustling in the wind. the yellow in the background could be toned down a bit though i do like the contrast of the flowers. i especially like the lower right hand corner. not bad for a first go around:)

I love the way you used color, and the energy in your painting. I can see the influence of pastel. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for all of your comments. I'm not sure how to remove that green area at the top. Would it work to just paint over it? Won't some of the color come through? See, I am a newbie in this medium.

Looks like you had a lot of fun with this.

Yep, you can just paint over at the top. It might take a few coats to cover it.

I think it looks great! In my opinion you can never go wrong with adding a little red;)
First and far most keep in mind that all artist opinions should be taken with a grain of salt. Amazing things can happen when you follow your own intuition! The same basic principle apply in all art(acrylic or pastel). But any artist loves to see when the rules are broken. Never hurts to try a new medium. Go for the gold!

Welcome to the forum. Great for your first attempt at acrylics. As you continue you'll find you can do great things with this medium. I look forward to see your style develop here! TJ

Thanks everyone for your wonderful words of encouragement. The process for me with acrylics is really interesting. I feel very free with these paints and find myself experimenting and being much more intuitive than with other mediums. My usual style is impressionistic, but more controlled. With the acrylics, at least for now, I feel very free and creative. So we'll see what comes out of that.
