Title: The Captain
Surface: Watercolor Paper
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!
This is an experiment with watercolour with Gauche used for the darker areas.
MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Do you think the partial face works?
Have I overdone the darks?
Does he look convincing?

Hi Steven ....I have already seen this one in The Marine Forum and I loved it then and still do! It is perfect as far as I am concerned!

Me too! I really enjoy their air of mystery, the contrast between the lights and darks. The smoke from his pipe is magical and beautifully painting in watercolour. Your darks are exciting, your skin tones masterful. Can you tell I really like this painting, it works for me in all aspects. In fact it reminds me a lot of a friends works in watercolour. He too pushes the boundaries..

Sensational watercolor work. Normally you shouldn't divide the face in two but it works in your creative composition. The pipe looks like a volcano! (good thing)

Wow! This is a great piece! He has a cold eye, which only adds to the painting. And the flow of the off centered black area through it is very appealing to me. I think you've done an excellent job!

The experiment worked.
This would make a good cover for a mystery novel.

Congrats, your experiment was a success. I love the half face, it is striking and teh power of the blacks really enhances the face. I thought at first it was oil. Nice job indeed.

Very well done! my only comment, the pipe+ smoke together, cause me see a huge penis; may be it is me only, but I am one someone at least...
I would make the smoke more airy and less shaped, unless this is a message you wish to express; up to you.
