View Full Version : Is 50% commission normal for a gallery?
04-12-2009, 08:37 PM
I am very happy to say a very high-end gallery in Chattanooga wants me in their gallery...YAY!!
They say their cut is 50%. Is that normal?
04-12-2009, 09:55 PM
I have heard that. Congratulations to you...."price accordingly", as they say.

Congrats on getting into a high-end gallery; that is great!
I don't know how it is in different regions of the country, but here in Cincinnati, the commercial galleries take a cut of 50%.

many non-for-profits will usually take 30%.
if you noticed, some of the pastel society shows that are shown in galleries are taking 50% commission.
conrats and good luck!

It's 50% here in the Northwest Paula. Some are 40%, but that's a rare find. Congrats Paula...you're on your way! Yes, price accordingly.

hi paula. a friend of mine has work in a gallery in saratoga, same thing 50%.how things change:( ,years ago it seemed like 30%was high. congrats on getting in!!!maybe i had better buy one before you get too famous:wink2:  lynne

50% is normal here. My wholesale price--or 50%--is what I need to make enough to keep me painting. That thought pattern keeps me from thinking I'm 'giving away' part of the value of the painting. Instead, an extra 50% is built in to my retail price in order to pay the marketing costs, which is how I think of the galleries, etc.

Congratulations Paula, how exciting. Your work is lovely. I pray you will do really well. Winny

04-13-2009, 04:07 PM
Thank you so much you guys!
Betsy, I went to their website and sent a short note introducing myself and telling them I was interested in having my work in their gallery. I gave my website address and said thank you. That put it in their court. She got right back to me and said, very enthusiastically, YES WE ARE INTERESTED!!! I'm so flattered!
04-13-2009, 04:47 PM
Paula, this is wonderful news, and so extremely well deserved!
Yup, you need to double your prices, even those paintings that don't go to the gallery, as you can't undercut them.
I've heard of galleries asking for 60+%, but they were in NY, NY.
You're gonna get famous!
04-13-2009, 04:49 PM
Thanks Charlie! I hope so!
I always wish to be a famous LIVING artist :)
04-13-2009, 04:56 PM
Congratulations Paula! I'm thrilled for you, and it is so richly deserved. Best wishes for some fantastic sales. And I'm going to be able to say, and I knew her when....
04-13-2009, 07:34 PM
Paula, congratulations!! Your paintings should sell well, they truly invite the viewer in.
04-13-2009, 10:35 PM
Congratulations! Fortune and Fame await!!!
04-13-2009, 10:36 PM
Paula, that is wonderful news! And very well deserved. Unfortunately, 50% is perfectly normal.
04-13-2009, 10:38 PM
Thank you so much Kym, Kathy, Don, Katherine!

I am in an upscale gallery in the small city where I live (population 100,000+) and they take a 40% commission. I do not think it is unusual for a gallery to take 50% and I have heard of 60% which I think is scandalous. The gallery I am in has a nice photo and write up about me plus my artwork on their website. Twice a year they have a pubic open house event with live music and lots of really good food and wine.
Find out what that 50% commission is going to do for you.
Congratulations Paula...wishing you the very best!
04-14-2009, 08:41 AM
Fantastic news Paula! Good luck with your meeting. How exciting!!!
04-14-2009, 06:15 PM
Thanks very much Susan, Karen!
04-14-2009, 08:19 PM
Wow! No wonder - I just looked at your website; your work is beautiful. Congratulations.
04-14-2009, 10:52 PM
Thank you Sandy!! I absolutely adore your work!
04-15-2009, 08:32 PM
Ok everybody...it's official!! I'm now represented by the Lookout Mountain Gallery in Chattanooga!! YIPPY!!
Your paintings are fabulous and very calming... love the music on your web site too.
50% is about normal for a high end gallery in my neighborhood too.
04-15-2009, 10:10 PM
I had confidence that you could do this! Congrats!
04-15-2009, 10:35 PM
Wow, Paula, Congratulations!!! You must be extremely happy!
04-16-2009, 12:07 AM

Congrats, Paula! Good news!
Have you been to the gallery? I suggest you check out and see what other pieces similar to yours are priced in that gallery! Don't give away the gold! .... that is your wonderful artwork!
04-16-2009, 11:41 AM
Kathy, Kathryn, Donna, Elsie...thank you very much!!
Elsie, Yes, I was at the gallery yesterday and met both partners. The gallery is beautiful! They also want me to do demos and workshops. In their new location they have a big room that I can do workshops in...so exciting!!
04-16-2009, 04:35 PM
Congratulations! What they offer you sounds very exciting too!
One of our local galleries (which is open only 3 days a week) asks for a non refundable $200 fee (to cover advertising, etc.) and charges a 45% commission on sold work. This could work in favor of the artist if she/he sells very well and the prices are high.
But in general, the 50% fee seems to be the norm.
04-17-2009, 09:01 AM
Congratulations, Paula! This news does not surprise me at all!
04-17-2009, 10:40 AM
Congratulations! I'm so excited for you and am amazed that you haven't already been represented by a gallery. Some galleries in Tucson and Tubac ask a 60% commission, but I think most around here are 50%. Not positive though. This is so awesome and you are so ready for this next step!
Good luck and keep those wonderful paintings coming!
04-17-2009, 10:53 AM
Adri, Katherine, Sara, Thank you!!
Sara, I'm in 2 other galleries, so this will make 3! I'm working on a 4th in Upstate NY too. YIPPY!!
