View Full Version : The Young WetCanvas Pastel Artist!!

David Patterson

I always enjoy reading the "Weekly Scumble" in here...and Kate's and Deborah's "youthful" photos were fun to look at. So just for fun, I (and probably many others) would enjoy seeing what all of the pastel artists in here looked like in their younger years. Tell us what age you were when the photo was taken...and at what age you created your first painting. Now, get out those old annuals and scan that photo like I did!!:)

I'm not sure if our lovely Moderators will kill this or not...just thought it might be fun...bring a smile or two...or even some ooos and awwws!

Me at 17 - I created my first painting at 13 in my Jr High art class.

Great idea, David (and Kate--who thought of it, didn't she?) We need to have her put her stunning photo in this thread, too!

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-Apr-2009/23609-old_family_shots_004.jpg

I was three--and my art career started with making 'mixtures' in the kitchen. My mom would let me take anything out and pour it into a pan, thinking I was cooking. But I distinctly remember adding things for color--ketchup was a favorite, and mustard, too, and I liked four for the sprinkle of white. It was art, not cooking!

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/01-Apr-2009/23609-deb_at_18.jpg

And I just want to share this so you'll know I was once young, slim and not just cute. If David can do it, so can I!

So Deborah...you started as an abstract artist, and a real cutie at that! :) Come to think of it...that might of been the way I started - my mom has a Fine Arts degree, so she also might of been up to something with me at that age...but I ended up a fairly good cook, so maybe not!

Thanks Paula, you're way too kind!! So...where's the pic!?:p

I was always a doodler, and between grade school and my mother I was always involved in some sort of craft. I painted Peanuts characters on a story board at 12 for the local library, to close off a reading area for Saturday reading time for the little kiddies.

Wow! All of you were so goodlooking as kids, it boggles me. I don't have any photos from when I was young. Never kept them because I was mortally embarrassed. I did not look good as a child or a teenager. I was funny looking and downright ugly the younger it got. Teen years I just looked stocky, belligerent and hairy, but never got a picture of myself in jeans and that ratty army coat with all the stuff painted on it and all the hair.

Imagine "Cousin It" from the Addams Family in bell bottom jeans and a long army coat with a lot of peace symbols and occasional random doodles in color on it and you have me in high school.

Hey, that looks like someone from Arivaca! LOL! We are mde up of a bunch of old hippies, ranchers and some retirees. The hippees now seem to rule the town. That's the group I hang with! My hair was down to my waist just a year ago in a long braid down my back. Sadly it was getting too hard to wash so it is no3w shorter, about chin length and what the hairstylist called an inverted bob. Well, not as inverted as I wanted it but oh well. Much easier to take care of! I only have one pic from when I was really young. right now I don't have any equipment set up to scan etc. It will have to wait a few wees for hubby to get back from MN. I have a pic of me at less than 2 and one of me for my Senior pic so I must have been 17. I hope I can find the one that isn't all washed out by the sun. hehehe You all look so cute/handsome/beautiful!

:D

Charlie is to the left, and her little cousin X removed is to the right. I wear a very modern bathing suit, it was red and blue. Probably 4 years old.

I was always drawing and colouring, making collages and built and painted a plastic model of Frankenstein's Monster (Boris Karloff version), but I think I was a bit older then. That is, I did things like that when it was possible to drag me away from reading books.

Lovely thread, and to think we we all small cute children in the mists of time! Soooo pretty, all of you!

Rob, we all looked totally hopeless in our lower teens. I had thick glasses and braces... 8-#

 Hi, All!
Oh, what fun! We all can use a good giggle these days!

Hmmm...when did I produce my first work of art?
My mom was an artist, so I was supplied with art stuff early on and encouraged. It was WWII era and paper was very scarce. My dad worked for the GE in Erie, PA and he used to bring home calendar backs etc. for me to draw and pain on! Also, a few of my early story books had little scribble "additions" by me! Prob. as soon as I could hold a crayon, I was handed one!

Ok, here are three of this Pastelist:
a baby photo, one in high school and another about second grade..age7 or so.

I sometimes feel like the character, Rose, in the movie Titanic, when she looked into the hand mirror that had been salvaged from her stateroom. Oh, such fun! Where does the time go? It was just yesterday!
Yes, the 1960's and 70's happened! The only thing I still have from that era is my very long hair! Ok, I still love beads and jewelry! I've left my sandels for Crocs, walk with a cane and certainly look more like the truth...pushing 70! As I look at the new versions of the "retro" clothes the youngin's are wearing...oh, those colors..did we really wear that stuff?

 this is such fun. I love looking at the pictures of all of you from years back. I have to play.

Here's a picture of me at age 11, from 1963:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Apr-2009/62165-Debbie-1963.jpg

And a few years later, a high school photo from 1968:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Apr-2009/62165-Debbie-1968.jpg

And last, a photo of me at age 25, one of the few times in my life when I wore my hair a bit longish. Most of my life I've always had my hair very short, as in the first two photos and as it is now. I was influenced a bit by the era I lived in and during college grew my hair almost halfway down my back. I have one photo of that era that I know of, but it's never been scanned. When I began working at a "real" job I cut it shoulder length to look more professional. But after my son was born I cut it short again, as I'd had most of my life, and it's been short ever since.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Apr-2009/62165-Debbie-1977-before-Brock-was-born-2.jpg

As for art work, I can't remember a time in my life when I was NOT drawing pictures. I drew constantly during childhood, mostly horses. They were typical "kid" works done on paper with crayons and pencils. My mom was an artist and always encouraged me. I think I did my first "real" painting (oil on canvas) when I was 12 - with my mom's help and encouragement (it was a horse, naturally). I don't have a scan of it, but here is one of my youthful crayon works, which I just rediscovered while cleaning junk out of my attic. No clue I still had any of these!

I like this. It's fun to see pictures of people when they were kids. I'm in my 30s, I was born in the mid 70s. Let's see what I can find on my computer. I have more, but I don't have a scanner right now.

Okay, so the first one was when I just a baby, not even 2 yet I don't think.
The second is probably 7 or 8. I'm not sure what I was doing here. LOL
And the third was taken by one of my friends when I was in art school. Probably around 1992. I think I was 18.
Also, these are really big, sorry

I don't remember when I started drawing. My mom said that when I was really little she came into my room and I had drawn a picture and put it on the wall. She was really impressed that I had hung my own picture since I was so young. She thought it was really cute until a while later when the picture came down and she saw that I had put it there to cover the one I had drawn directly on the wall. I was sneaky.

 and I always *yearned* to have red hair and was so bummed out and sad that I didn't. So when I drew characters I almost always gave them the red hair I wanted myself. :D
