 Hi again, all. Here's a new attempt at sketching in pastel---the whole shed has a lot of the paper showing, and isn't in detail---all by design. Although it may not be exactly right, I wanted to try a " sketch" rather than a deeply layered painting. I drew this in pencil. about 18 x 20, and then put it onto rose grey Daler-Rowney pastel paper. C's & c's always welcomed---Thanks for looking.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/03-Mar-2009/128302-kit-mac-09.jpg I only used the contrast auto-fix of my software program trying to get the colors to be more as they really are. This was early morning, late April, my own horses.

Hi Ida!!!
Beautiful horses! I love the loose scrubby feeling of the barn and the ground. Success! Only change would be to alter the color of the beams' shadows - a darker blue, just a thought. Really excellent of your babies. I bet you wake to a white wonderland tomorrow. Bundle up! Wish you well!

This is so nice, Ida! I actually prefer not to have the whole painting covered in thck layers of pastel, with some parts of the paper showing through. The last time I tried barn wood and got it to look right I did the same as you - I let the paper show through and it really helped give the weathered look. Your rose gray paper color was perfect for this! You are lucky to have such beautiful models to work from - I hope we get to see them again.

Its so nice to have all your comments. This has been a hard winter, and spring for me, but now that the older gentleman I was caring for has passed, I can think of happier and sunnier things. I had made the drawing a time ago, just itching to begin it in pastel but my commitment was to care for this gentleman to the end. He always was so encouraging to me--I painted his house, his love, in watercolor 4 years ago and even tho it wasn't great to me , he loved it, and I was glad I had made the effort to do it--he was so happy. And always encouraged me to the max. So I spent some hours alone a few days ago and did this one of horses which I love-----so now I am OK--can go on and work harder. Your words have been nice and encouraging-----And Carole, I soo agree on the shadows!!!! Tooo blue blue----so I plan to grey them abit, with a little warm color for interest. I think experimentation is always the answer!!!! Thank you for your comment!!

Well done! The horses pop and it has a very painterly feel to me, not over done. Very nice, and the colt is very alert.
