I've done something similar to this with glass alone. You make a flat bottomed glass blob for the base and then once it's cooled a bit, pull a stringer upwards from the middle to hold your bead. Looks great in clear!

I bet it does. You use boro? I tried it in soft glass and had some problems with fragility, so that's why I went to mandrel pieces. I have 1/16th holes in my beads and that might make a difference, due to the thin part to hold the bead in place.
