View Full Version : GB Jac - graphite WIP

02-21-2009, 06:10 PM
This is my latest commission. GB Jac is an outstanding Quarterhorse stallion
and I am really proud, that I have got this order
But it will take me some time for sure... so I better show you some steps.
The size is A3 = double letter size. This one is only the left side, on the right side comes a portrait of the horse.
And such a lot of black background  I have to go over several times,
until ist is as deep black, as I want it.
I hope you enjoy it,
greetings, Iris

And this is the ref. photograph:

Wow! I just love your work this is going to be stunning!!

02-22-2009, 04:16 PM
Iris, I just finished (I think) a drawing last night with dirt/dust kick-up. I did a circular pattern stroke with the pencil where the dirt/shadow was darkest and then used a blending tool to pull it out into dust. Where the horse's hooves and leg disappeared into the dust I used the tool to gently pull them into the dust.

I have a collection of tortillions that I use for blending. They don't have that "fingernails on chalkboard" effect on me blending stumps do because they are made with a softer paper.

I posted that drawing in the Breed a Week 7 thread for ref: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=547616

Hope that helps.

Looks awesome!!

02-23-2009, 09:26 PM
I'm just blown away. O: Are you making all the edges black, or are you adding in dust?

02-25-2009, 08:32 AM
love this so far! it has a fluid, almost liquid look that I really like :)

02-25-2009, 02:13 PM
Thank you for all your kind comments
@She-She: I hope I don't need more than two pencils, one for each side. I tell you, when I'm finished
@Wyanne: thank you for the tips and the link. Your horse is so beautiful
I have started inbetween a part of the dust, and I think I could fix it... I
also blended. With a paper towel. And worked with a kneaterasor (I hope this word does exist ;-) )
@Secluded-Dream: I have to make it deep black until the edges. With
exception of the dust on the floor.

I hope I find the time later this evening to show the actually version.
Greetings to all of you,

03-01-2009, 12:48 AM
WOW! I am completely blown away by the depth of black you are achieving! What kind of pencils do you use??

If I thought I could do half this well with graphite, I'd be ordering some pencils tomorrow!!

03-01-2009, 03:42 AM
oooh wow I dont know which is more beautiful, your drawing or the horse. This is just wonderful :)

03-12-2009, 12:43 PM
Thank you also Lois, Ann and Elybaby
And sorry, that I am writing so late...
@Ann: I use only one kind of pencil, the 8B. For horses this is my
absolutely favourite

Finally the last days I found time for drawing and could go on. I think
the left side is ready. Now I can start the head-portrait at the right side.
Greetings, Iris

Iris........your planning on this is flawless and your workmanship is even better.

03-13-2009, 10:26 AM
Hi Iris,
As always I thoroughly enjoy your work, this is no exception. I am always amazed at how you handle 8b graphite with such ease and definition of your values.
I have two small observations to offer. One being the shadow on the neck from the reign looks too stiff to me. The motion doesn't look right, it seem to straight, where it would bow up just slightly to reflect the light and movement of the leather. Look at your shadow of the reins coming out of the hand, that looks perfect, and also makes the shadow on the neck stick out more to me and appear too stiff. Also the same shadow seems to carry of the neck or at least give the appearance of doing so. I drew a little circle to poinpoint the area I in question.

My second issue is with the rider. Is his body going to be anymore detailed than it is now? I don't have a problem with subject 'fading' into their background but being there is so little in sharp persepctive (foot, hand) and so much fading away (horn of the saddle, arm, leg, hip) so suddenly I have trouble reading it, especially so close to the edge. It looks more like the invisible man is sitting in the saddle. If this is how to owner commissioned it well then enough said there*lol* But are you considering revisiting this area if not?

Just my two cents worth. Overall this is exquisite and I look forward to seeing it completed!

03-15-2009, 05:02 PM
thank you for your comments scatdaddy and QueenBart
@QueenBart: I understand what you mean about the shadow of the rein...
and you are right  I havent seen that, but now I will change it! Thank
you for telling me that!
The rider has to go over into the background. It is like that on the ref.Photograph...

I worked a littlebit more on it this weekend. Here are two updates:

this picture seems, that it doesn't take an end :o
