It's been a long time since I have painted an animal and i think this is the first elephant in oil that I have ever done. It is very large for me, around 24 x 30 inches and is a gift for a relative who was born and lived in Kenya for many years. I have a long way to go yet but any suggestions for improvement will be appreciated as always. Oil is a new medium for me and I am quite enjoying working for it.

Thanks for looking,

Linda
p.s. I have a small work in progress for this painting on my blog.

Linda, I think you have a wonderful start to this painting. The undertones are great and will add a wonderful depth to the finished piece. Can't wait to see it completed.

Thanks so much everyone. I have to go to work another two days until I will get to this one again. Can't wait to have it finished as it is dragging out a little too long for me. I like to finish fast and get on to the next one.

With a piece as dramatic as this, it would be worth while to take your time. You could do great things.

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement. I have done a little more today mostly on the head by adding some more of the wrinkles and darkening the shadows and adding some more highlights. I haven't touched the background or legs again. I think tomorrow I will work on that. Any suggestions for improvement is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much Teresa. I think I am making progress but it is taking so much longer than my usual pastels.

I love Elephants and have three on at the moment; I love the feel you have achieved already with the colour a movement with yours. The crop is great too.

I have worked another couple of hours on the background today and made the darks a little darker. This photo is probably the closest to the actual colors yet. Any suggestions or critques would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Thankyou so much Patrick and Gary. I think I have found my medium also. I am really enjoying these stinky oils.
