A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: 2008 Oil Pastel Retrospective
Project Leader: Pat Isaac
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Oil Pastel
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Show off your best paintings of 2008! You may select up to TWO oil pastel paintings that you painted in 2008 and post them in the final images of this project. This is for OIL PASTELS only.

Please write a brief description of why these are your favorites, include the size and materials used. Post your images in the Gallery Exhibit and post your discussion in the discussion thread.

This is finished work so no critiques please!

You have to "register" in the Project itself in order to post your paintings. Use the "click here" link, register your intent to participate, then post your 2 favorites of 2008 in the "gallery view" part of the project.

For those of you not familiar with how to comment on all the paintings, here is a tutorial: When you are in the gallery, you will see all the paintings at once. After commenting on the first one, close it out by clicking on the red "x" in the upper right corner. This will take you back to the comment page. Hit your green back button and it will take you back to the Gallery. Repeat for each one you want to comment on.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=1225)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Pat, this is spectacular. I've never tried to do a flower with that structure, not in colored pencil or anything else. The complexity and detail and richness of hue and shadow are extraordinary. This goes beyond photography. I like the way you kept the background loose to focus attention on the perfect flower, and the way you cooled the shadows instead of just shading them darker. Your mastery of color and value in this is amazing. Beautiful, beautiful work. I can see why you took such joy in doing it. I would've.

Kathryn, this one's fun! I love the strong values and wild color, especially the way you captured the insane greens of a hot climate. This one takes me right back to French Quarter courtyards with pot gardening (very common) and the French Market and so many gardens I loved walking past down there. It's beautiful. Well balanced and lively and warm -- it's bursting with life and shows something I never had the words for when I lived there but always loved. You could subtitle it Abundance.

What they used to say down there in New Orleans was that if you throw a seed at the ground it'll sprout before it hits. That's how moist and warm it was, and the daily rains meant that all the year-round greenery was clean rather than dusty and muted. It was always mad rich green everywhere I looked, punctuated with warm complements of flowers whenever I looked. Even trees and shrubs were usually in bloom year round.

"Joy"
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/35760/tn_sunflowerfinal.JPG

This one is great too, for all the reasons that your orange flower was glorious. With this one though, I like the irregular way some petals are falling forward and its lack of perfection, its natural symmetry combined with equally natural floppiness and true rich sunlight. It looks like it's moving on its stem to follow the sun and not quite there yet but will be. Those top petals unfolding are a delight. I can see why you titled it Joy.

On both of these I'm studying your hue changes because they remind me of Charlie's "Colourist" approach, I'm seeing the same color principles in action and the result is that the sunlight is yellow. Not just "the flower is yellow" but "the sunlight is warm too." You've cooled the shadows without breaking the impression of local color and you've warmed the lights by contrast till yellow light on a yellow thing is intense! Wonderful!

Porter River
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/99263/PorterRiver2008.jpg

Wow. The mountains are so solid and pure. They rise sculpted and powerful into firm three dimensional shapes, recede into the distance without losing their boldness. They look like young mountains. The whole area is so dramatic. The river may occupy the title but it's the mountains that command my attention, the foreground is good but that far mountain and the red one just grip me. Wonderful scene. It makes me feel like there's thousands of miles of elbow room around me and not a care in the world, just a wild hint of glorious adventure ahead.

Storm, Spencer Beach
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/99263/SpencerBeachOP2008.jpg

This one calls to me as the sea always calls to me. I love the subtle reflections in the receding waves coming off the beach and the lines of curled surf, the lowering clouds, the wet sand and even the footprints and occasional pale details breaking it up. This one also carries me away to wild places and it has that feel of distance about it, distance and freedom and the kind of peace that comes of being in wild places.

You've inspired me to try to paint wild weather in 2009. I live in Kansas, famous for its summer storms, maybe this year I'll go upstairs during one and sit in the covered porch we call the Cold Room and sketch when the sky goes dark.

House of peace
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/137382/LittleHouse.JPG

Well titled. I love the soft colors and the prismatic shifts within the areas in this landscape, the complements that make the greens so jazzy and the cool water with its lavender accents. It has a magical sense about it, a storyland feeling where unicorns could walk up to the stream to drink.

the Declining day
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/137382/Asr.JPG

This one's great. The early sunset light is very good. I love the way you brought up the warm highlights on top of the hill that's in front of the little house, and showed the cool reflections of the eastern sky accurately on the water. Your water reflects beautifully and the perspective is good especially on the hills. There's a clear progression between gentle low gradients in the foreground slopes and moderately steep ones behind the house and then the dramatic nearly pyramidal mountains beyond.

I think the sense of peace in these landscapes is heightened by your jagged mountains and distant drama, there's a contrast of story elements there within the scenes that make the prettiness of foreground house, stream, meadows with gentle slopes and smooth windless lakes a precious peace, a hard-won peace rather than something overly sentimental. Those opposing themes give both of these paintings a lot of power.

One of my favorites. It's so hard to capture the subtle value shifts and curling shapes of a dried leaf, and the way you got the soft transitions on the acorns as well is so glorious. You have picked an interesting compostion. The colors you have used all go together well -- have a similiar level of intensity, which is very good. I like your rendering of the house roof, waterfall and water. I do not see anything hugely "wrong" with the background trees, I just think they would look better sitting down further so as not to be even with the house roof. Alot of nice rendereing here! Pony at Winter Pasture
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/84584/tn_PonyatWinterPasture.jpg

This is beautiful. I was happily surprised to discover you did it on blue-gray paper, because its crisp whites leaped out at me as soon as I saw it. Beautiful proportions and modeling. This pony looks so real. The anatomy is so accurate, and the pose is so natural. You didn't try to show all four legs, you let one of them be obscured by its leg and tail. That's a mistake I've made in several horse studies, tried to show everything whether it showed or not.

The grass and snow seem very natural too, the whole painting is so balanced. Gorgeous.

Ginger Razberry
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1225/completed/84584/tn_FinneyGingerRazberry.jpg

This one is gorgeous too. I like your choice of that deep red background to show off Ginger's warm color. Beautiful anatomy, so accurate in all Ginger's proportions. I think you must have really got the likeness. The little crescent mark on her forehead looks unique, I've seen markings like that on horses before. One of the loveliest details is the veins on her face. Horses have those and some painters leave them out to flatter, but she's more beautiful with them and looks more like a real horse than a plastic horse toy.

Oh, I had to add one more animal painting compliment. On both of these you're so good at conveying the direction of the hair. It's one vital thing to pay attention to drawing any animal, because if you go across the hair direction they don't look real at all.

Wendell, I saw this one before and loved it then. It is so spectacular. This one's fun. I like the golden grass and dried-straw colors, the strong values, the brilliant sky. The clouds are interesting, the way you got the feeling of an oncoming storm is great. Those little rolls in the distance are striking against the dark sky, something that adds menace to the storm.

This became one of my favorites from the moment I first saw it. You only posted a small thumb, the one in the thread was larger, but I can still see how well you captured every detail of everything there and created this magical landscape. The clean white and red farmhouse is so perfect and I've seen some that freshly painted and clean. The golden fields and green foliage, the clouds, the shading in the sky all shows a place that is special, a place with its own kind of tame magic.

You convey so much happiness in this painting, it's something about the well-kept house and land. Reminds me a little of the Shire or something.

This was my favorite of 2008 because it reminds me of the great experience I had in Hong Kong, where I took the reference photo last Chinese New Year. I think it shows I did gain something from the Color & Design class I did it for, even if I don't know consiously what I got out of it. This looks nothing like the typically tight rendering and "true to the reference" I usually do and it's the direction I want to explore for a while.

This is so great. I love the motion and that jazzy watercolor background blooming all over, the unity of color, the bright details. I can see the motion of the actors dancing in this costume. It's wonderful.

Yusuke, all I can say is your "sketches" - at least those I've seen of the past year's 150(!) - are wonderful works of art. These apples are exquisite - well observed and beautifully rendered. You have a distinctive style which I like very much.

It's been said before, your sketches are as good as finished works. This one is exceptionally lifelike. Love the details right down to each brown spot. I don't know how you manage that with fat OP sticks, but it's wonderful.

Gorgeous portrait. I love the way you combine strong brights to give an impression of neutrals and skin tones in this. A close look shows he's got pink and purple cheeks, blue beard, yellow sunny bits here and there -- it has a primary color harmony and yet it reads true as it can be. Beautiful painting with a powerful grasp of color theory. I guess it's true that if you get the values right you can use any colors you want!

I don't usually like primary-triad color harmonies but in this you've carried it to an extraordinary level that's making me rethink them.

Yusuke, I love this. I've loved your studies of small objects ever since I found the OP forum, but had no idea you could do such a glorious plein air painting. You've captured the climate, the feel of the air, the light, the architecture, the plants... everything in this is so true. One of those paintings more true than a photo could hope to be.
