A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: 2008 Pastel Retrospective
Project Leader: Paula Ford
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Your best of 2008! This project is dedicated to all of your hard work throughout the year, so let's showcase your best!

You may select up to TWO pastel paintings that you painted in 2008 and post them in the "Final Images" of this Project. This project is for soft pastels only.

Please write a brief description of why you believe these are your best or favorite paintings of 2008, and include the size of the painting and materials used. Post your images in the Gallery Exhibit and post your discussion in the discussion thread.

Keep in mind these are finished paintings, so no critiques please!

You have to "register" in the Project itself in order to post your paintings. Use the "click here" link in the above post, register your intent to participate in the Project, then post your 2 BEST or FAVORITES of 2008 in the "finished" or "gallery view" part of the Project.

For those of you not familiar with how to comment on all the paintings, here is a tutorial: When you are in the gallery, you will see all the paintings at once. After commenting on the first one, close it out by clicking on the red "x" in the upper right corner. This will take you back to the comment page. Hit your green back button and it will take you back to the Gallery. Repeat for each one you want to comment on.

The reference links below are to the 2007 Pastel Retrospective. http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=467686&highlight=2007+Pastel+Retrospective. Thanks for your participation!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=1224)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Thanks for posting our annual retrospective thread, Paula! I'm looking forward to seeing the paintings people select as their BEST!!

San Carlos

This is a special favorite of mine, for the reasons I put in the description of it. Of all the paintings I did this year, this is the one I would frame and keep for myself.

One thing that concerned me is that the 'thumbnails' on both of these are HUGE! I wonder if I should go back and substitute a smaller image file. Advice appreciated...

Deborah

This painting is one of the two video workshop paintings I produced for Artist's Network TV. I really like the way this one came out--it pleases me for a number of reasons, which I listed in my description. I'm also glad that it's been instructional for so many people. What a delight!

I'll just put that in parentheses so you know it's not part of my comments.

Deborah, I love that video. I saw the preview and I am planning to buy it, because the way you demonstrated it just in the short version was so fascinating. I love the final painting. It's been intriguing me for months, and I'm so happy now to know it's one of your favorites too!

I hope you do many more videos for ArtistsNetworkTV -- when I get past my current project I'm going to purchase several of them, but your pair topped the list all along, so please do more of them!

Actually, having taken the "Snow" class with you, would you consider doing one on "Snow" as a theme? Or another weather theme like "Rain" and slick surfaces, something cool like that? The snow one would be fun but if you tackle something similar in its dificulty and drama that I've never seen you do, it'd be even more exciting.

Especially rain on pavements where it reflects -- like all those Impressionists that did Paris every time it got soggy.

8" x 10" soft pastels on white Colourfix paper. I don't remember which pastels I used for it, might have been my Rembrandts or my Neopastels or a mix of several sets. i know I had Senneliers but don't think I used them on this one.

5" x 7"
Sanford NuPastels on 140lb cold press watercolor paper coated with two thin coats of Colourfix clear sanded primer, which I believe I applied over the sketch so the lines wouldn't gray out the painting over them.

This has that feeling of cool moist air. I remember California days that felt like this and it is so wonderful to immerse in it and walk down your paths of memory. Your paintings always have this joyousness to them that makes me smile, no matter what you've chosen to paint you will always find what's beautiful in it.

Cold and damp? Make it cool and moist and lovely. Hot and dry? Sunny and bright. When you paint you bring out the world at its best, whatever its best is at the moment.

This one is so full of drama. It's got that vastness that I love in some landscapes, I feel the scale of the storm and my heart quickened as I looked at it. I could feel the wind begin to gust.

I've never been there but you've made this real. You're so good at capturing the spirit of place with something like this. Wow.

This is awesome. Carry me away to the happy place where I can lay around and beach comb and sketch cool things like boats on land.

You have such a graceful way of rounding everything, big painterly strokes but they still describe shapes carefully -- it's simultaneously sloppy and very accurate in a way that I'm still struggling to master. The trees are awesome, those wild masses of green under that sky full of motion are gorgeous. The whole painting is deceptively simple, it's got so much going on with it that it engages me again and again.

Blue Boy after Gainsborough
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1224/completed/46454/tn_blueboy377x503.JPG

Wow.

Elegantly accurate. Brings back some memories, a print of this hung on the wall of the room outside the principal's office when I was a kid. Whenever I got in trouble (nearly daily), I would be staring at how Gainsborough got the fabric to look real and shiny, got the boy's face looking so real, got the plumes and the bows and the silk all looking real.

I didn't appreciate the background till I was a grownup. You've captured why this piece has such enduring fame though, I recognized it instantly and all the memories flooded back.

This one's beautiful too. I've never seen the original so I can't compare how well you copied, but I'm fascinated by the texture of her white gown, the folds and light and silkiness of it. You're learning a lot from copying the masters and it shows!

I ought to dare try it someday, just pick a classical painting I love and copy it for myself and hang the study in my room.

Sunset at Algarve
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/1224/completed/93947/tn_BoydandBridsAlgarveSunsetSmall.JPG

This is so great. I love the color and the color of the light, the way it's so rich with detail and balanced so that it doesn't seem busy. It really isn't, it's relaxing and moody in a good way, a peaceful moment of "wow this sunset is great" feeling to it.

How did you manage to convey the sense of ease and pleasure in it, I wonder? What is it that makes this sunset so easy-feeling, like there are no cares and the blokes whose boats they are went down to the pub in a good mood? It just feels like that, harmonious, pleasant, end of a good day feeling.

Thanks, Paula! I'm enjoying the whole show now, feeling like 2008 was the year I rediscovered pastels. Everything I did in 2008 was a discovery, it makes everything I did before it look like quick studies -- they were, I really did not know how to paint with pastels in depth.

apologies my comments being so brief for each painting ... they all deserve soooooo much more .... they're all fabulous paintings each unto themselves !! ... it's great to see 'em all in this gallery ... many thx paula for making it all possible ...

and thank you for pinkie and blue boy's comments, all !! .... as binkie mentioned, the originals of these two paintings, which altho painted by different artists, are often thought of as a pair that belong together and people very often got copies of both rather than just one ... anyway, getting back on track ... the originals hang today, together in the huntington gallery, san marino california, in the same room, although on separate walls but directly opposite each other ... here's a link to that gallery ... http://www.huntington.org/ArtDiv/HuntingGall.html in case you're interested to read further about these pieces ...

Thank you so much, Paula and Violet. Of course, I barely made it past the bridge, because I was painting instead. I believe there's a reconstructed Indian villiage down there. I also wish I'd paused under the bridge to see where George Washington carved his initials as the surveyor. I'm sure we'll be going back next summer. They also have one of the best gift shops ever, according to the Washington Post. I'm trying to use the image with them.

Pippa and Violet, thanks so much for your comments. I think loose describes my style. Being at WC makes me want to concentrate on the details more, because I very much appreciate the works people share. I am trying to work slower, without the plein air pressure, and get to the details. The Natural Bridge (11x14) took 2h there and less than 30 min at home due to a smudge. Monterey at dusk (5.5x8.5) was maybe 45 minutes. I've often thought about detail, but my brain refuses to render it. (Suggestions welcomed.)

Ken, this golden girl (Addy) seems to glow from within. I've admired it several times as I've come across this painting, but I think I've not commented before. Only today I discovered the amount of detail in her dress -- honestly, her face, eyes, and hair captivated me so. Love the cool highlights in the hair.
