A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!
Title: Glass Bottles a la Pastel
Project Leader: Laura Brito
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Still Life
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited
Description:
I have a large collection of pretty glass bottles of all shapes and sizes and they tend to be a good interesting topic for pastel paintings. I thought I would share these with everyone else. You can of course use your own bottle <grin>
Additional Information:
For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=262)
Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

I really have a hard time with glass in paintings, I do not seem able to get the translucency that I desire. So I am hoping this project will help me figure that portion of it out.
If anyone else has tips please post them to this thread as well!
Thank you
Laura

But which one to pick.............??? :)

Okay...I'm in! :D....but like Sundiver says....which one to pick! They are all so beautiful. Should be an interesting project Laura, I have only tried to do glass once, and not very effectively I might add!
Hallo -
Just signed up ... oh yes, what a wide collection of exquisite bottles! :p With my minimal capabilities at pastel, I'm only afraid I may not be able to do them justice :( ...

Oh I think all of us can use practice on this item! glass is hard to do but probably once you figure it out it will be easier (I didn't say easy hehe)
Enjoy!

Laura, this will be fun and I haven't done a project in a long time. I bought some glass bottles recently on sale at a Michaels...I can't seem to pass us anything that only cost a quarter!!
Off to join your project
I'm working on some small pieces of MiTientes...4x6...so maybe I can do more than one! LOL

I need to do this project too. I avoid glass in my paintings because I have no confidence. Would someone who is good at this please give us some pointers?
By the way that bottle collection is gorgous. Looks like you have some very old ones there.
I think I will try a glass or bottle of my own so I can study it closer.

I didn't know that there were rules to pastel painting either so I've probably broken every one of them:D :cat:

Before I joined WetCanvas, I did a painting of these bottles. I took this picture early one morning. I don't know if I am stepping on the project coordinator's toes by adding my image to this thread, so if I am, PLEASE tell me!!! I just love the light in this image, and wanted to share it with anyone who would like to paint these glass bottless.

Hi TeAnne, glad to hear you like it :D ... s'not very big, though, 9 x 12 " ...
Thanks, Jake, but when you hear this, you'll laugh your fill at me and shake your head at that piece. I started using the wrong paper (regular A4). Then, to make it worse, I used a 3B GRAPHITE pencil to do the original drawing. To top it all off, the pastels went on too hard, so the whole thing came out as one muddy mess. Heck, I thought the close-ups would've turned heads away, lol.
Thank you, Laura :) ... for the moment, I think some of the most important things for me about the translucency is to have one or two spots of strong highlight, which'll indicate strong light. When you have strong light, glass would appear more translucent. To support that, comes tone contrast. Sometimes, if the light is strong enough, you can see inside to the bottom of the glass; you can draw that in, another hint at translucency. If you've background, introduce some of the bg colours into it. The shadow as well, has to vary a little in tones, so that it's not one solid fill as it would be if the object were opaque. Ack, I really don't know ... hardly ever worked in pastels (oops, forgot to introduce myself in this forum) ... that's just IMHO anyway.

Great highlights, clear sharp lines for the outline, especially the brim and neck. (Stupid question-) Could you please tell me a little about that red sugar paper? Is it specially for pastels, and if so, what kind?

Sugar paper is the cheapest pastel paper you can buy.....:D ....it comes in several colours and it is sold here in England everywhere.... and I must admit I quite like it. Just got myself some black W/N pastel paper which is fabulous...but haven't quite worked out how to get my image onto it. I usually trace outlines as I can't seem to draw very well....but how do you trace onto black paper?????
Hey....I use WC paper regularly for pastel work. It works quite well....especially the hot pressed paper. I really don't think your picture was a muddy mess:D ....Whatever you decide to use is OK.
As long as you are happy with the result....don't beat yourself up over this:D

This looks great to me! The red paper worked wonderfully here. I've never seen sugar paper. I wonder if we have it in the US?
To trace onto black paper, rub a medium or light colored pastel onto the back of your drawing and then lay the drawing on top of the black paper and trace back over your lines lightly with a pencil and it will transfer your lines to the paper. Be careful not to press hard because you don't want to make an impression in the paper.

Thanks Karen, Melisa!! :D Really made my day ... well, I guess I didn't have enough confidence in myself and in those pieces ... wasn't sure if it was good enough to meet "standards", to be posted as a final (especially when I took a tour round the beautifully finished paintings in the project and in the forum, OMG! ). I haven't done pastel in ages, and very seldom in the past ... still working on it and having much to learn in a lot of areas of medium.

Hey thanks everyone for the comments on my bottle. It was pointed out to me that I failed to put the base of the bottle in.....duh! I guess if you can see the shadow through the bottle you'd also be able to see the backside of the bottle. I wondered why I kept looking at this piece and thinking it looked so flat!! Anyway...I'm going to try (try being the keyword here) and do some reworking of this.

Really hard. Transparency/translucency is difficult, but then the crazing, Holy Moly!!!!!! Anyway, here it is. It ain't much, but it's all I've got at the moment.

My perspective is a bit off, both sides of the bottle aren't the same......was a great learning experience though! I don't ever remember trying to draw or paint anything glass before!

I have a question. Is it better to put in the background and then draw the bottle in over it, or to draw the bottle and add touches of the background to it? If I were doing this in oils, I'd do the whole background first and put the bottle on top but I don't know if that would work in pastels without making mud. How are all of you doing it?

Another good one! Is this one from your imagination too?
Thanks, Melisa (and Jake :) -- had to go back and edit this post) ... yes, more bottles out of thin air. Maybe Laura's already found out (yikes! ), drawing from imagination seems easier ... with a real model or reference, my knees start shaking, and everything eventually becomes one great catastrophe. A bad habit really, since I badly need the practice with observation and realism.
I have a question. Is it better to put in the background and then draw the bottle in over it, or to draw the bottle and add touches of the background to it? If I were doing this in oils, I'd do the whole background first and put the bottle on top but I don't know if that would work in pastels without making mud. How are all of you doing it?
Technically, I think most people recommend doing the bg first, just because that's "how you're supposed to do it", but as you wisely pointed out, you'll have to be really careful not to layer the bg too thickly, as a tendency to press hard to establish form when you're doing the bottle on top could result in a dry mud bath.
But well, hehe, I've already broken so many rules, so another one won't hurt. I find it easier to do the bottle first, that being the focal point. After I finish toning and just before I solidify the highlights, I turn my attention to the bg. Then I strengthen the light points on the bottle, maybe touch up on the toning (in case I introduced too much bg into the bottle), and finish.

Thanks Melisa and everybody who commented on my piece.
Melissa, I confess that I chose that one because I thought it would be easiest. LOL. And one more confession--I did go back and make it more symmetrical. I just couldn't stand the asymmetry every time I looked at it. (The anal-retentive in me couldn't leave it alone.) I think it's okay now, though. I didn't ruin it, after all. :D

It happens to me EVERY time. In fact, I'm still not truly happy with the milkglass cornucopias I did last nite. I wish they popped out better. But it may be just me. I've thought about making the background darker, but I just don't know.......... The table it's on is already so dark.

Superb! First pastel? I'd love to see what you do when you're NOT a pastel newbie! The lines are clean, clear and crisp. Translucency is perfect and symmetry is right on. Excellent work!
mmdm, Jakeally, dupliKate, gloria777a, Birdie, AriadneArts, hope I didn't miss anyone: Wow!, what a reception.
My wife bought a set of pastels recently so I thought I'd try 'em out.
I was expecting for someone to tell me what a terrible background I did, seeing as I was frustrated at that time, with a small selection of colours, and just wanted to get it done. How you folks have the patience with these cumbersome blocks of colour is a mystery to me :)
Anyway, thank you so much for your kind comments, they're really appreciated.

Crisp, clean lines and subtle blending of colours and tones ... the result seems to indicate careful and accurate observation of the subject matter and lighting. Quite a well-accomplished painting, xixo!

mmdm,
I used the only piece of paper that I had!
But someone told me that darker colors make the pastels pop out more! and I knew I wanted this one to have a bright look. The colors of the bottles were all pastel...yellow, green, dark pink/purple color. I posted a pic of them in the projects folder. I would have chosen a deep purple probably, if I'd had that color!
carly
carly: thank you kindly (woa!, excellent use of color in multiple bottles)
hlee: Feels funny talking to someone living on an asteroid :)
I used Prismacolor Newpastel, firm pastel color sticks (I had to check the box). The paper is 11" x 14" medium toothed 75 lb. I worked from one of the photos provided, leaving it displayed on my computer monitor. I started with a big white blank page and a bigger blank look on my face :D Then I freehanded an outline of the pitcher with a 4H pencil (I think). Then started working from the top of it, shading in the dark blue rim, very gingerly at first, not knowing how it was going to turn out. I soon discovered it's really difficult to put highlights in when the pastel has built up. I just progressed from top down, trying to identify the colours and picking the nearest one, going over with other colours where it didn't seem to look right (blending is not as good as I had hoped with pastels). The background was done fairly quickly, and I hadn't a colour near that of the table so tried to blend two... that's where I started to mess up and called it a day. It took me several hours to do this and although I'm quite happy with the pitcher itself, I know I could improve the background... still might. Did that cover it?
I guess a looser style is more appropriate to pastels, judging by the marvelous pieces seen on here, but it was a good exercise anyway. Thanks!

Well your entries are all so beautiful! Can't decide which one I like the best. I added mine in the progress report...I have been lurking too long. You all made me feel guilty for not doing one so I pulled out my portrait pastels which are well used away...very few colors left...and an old sketch pad...not at all pastel paper so I don't imagine this piece of work will last too long...anyway, thanks for the inspiration!

LOL! Well, I still admire you for even owning a piece of bright red pastel paper! You have inspired me! I'm going to buy myself a really bright colorful piece. Something completely different from what I would normally get. It might sit around forever while I wait for the perfect thing to paint on it, but I'll try not to let that happen. :)

Jakekelly and mmdm thank you so much for your kind words! I did add just a touch and put it in the finished gallery. The pitcher looks a little too thin and not scratchy enough...wasn't too sure about that one., how the glass is. That's why I like working with life better than photos. I can put my hands on it and feel the textures. I love blue mason jars.

There's a pleasantly light quality to the tones and translucency of the glass ... the combination of soft aqua and blues against a darker bg very effective ... and adding splashes of the yellow really adds a finishing touch to the painting. Very lovely, d_garden!

Interesting use of colours and composition ... introduction of some of the purple on the left to the bright pink on the right keeps it fairly balanced and the overall painting coherent.

Pam, I really had to laugh at that comment! This painting is sitting across from me on the floor of my studio...and I've been wondering what to do with it now!! I should have painted the bottle more their real size of 8 inches tall! instead of 18!!
Someone mentioned about the bottles leaning...the bottom of the yellow bottle is slanted so it leans naturally!

I've been trying to use canvas paper for the oil pastels but the texture seems way too coarse. What do you use?
It also seems impossible to put light over dark which is the way I'm used to working with the soft pastels. Takes some rethinking I guess.

For those bottles I used bristol vellum, and because I covered the dark colors with acrylic medium (covered the whole thing actually) I was able to put light colors on top of that.

Thx, Maverick, for your kind comments. Crazing is that crackled effect one often sees in glass and pottery. Not all depression glass is crazed and not all crazed glass is depression glass. Actually, Laura Brito could tell you more about this particular glass because her husband owns it.

Thanks so much for your lovely remarks, Kim. Actually I used an off-white Strathmore pastel paper, but all the paper is covered with pastel. I began with hard white pastels on the vase and ended with very soft white Schminkes.

Actually Crackle Glass is not crazed glassl ike the finish you see on Porcelian. It is different. Crackle Glass is hand blown and once the piece has its shape and form, almost finished they dunk it into a bucket of water, which shocks the glass and cracks it all over. So much that the piece would not withstand touching So to make the object durable they put it back into the flame to melt it back together, but not to much as to lose the cracks....in fact there is a project here on WetCanvas that I started called Crackle Glass Beads - Many of us tried our hands at cracking the glass!! hehe, It is alot of fun! So that is where the name crackle glass comes from, my Husband's collection is about 70 pieces currently, no I am wrong about 80. hehe, he really gets into it and can tell you who made which one, how old they are, he has a few important pieces as well in his collection, one that is worth $2000.00 and a few others worth a little less. Most range in price from $50 up to $400.00 each. Most are at least 50 years old. The bottles with stoppers are pretty amazing because usually the stopper or the bottle gets broken, so to have a complete set is really something good! Crackle Glass is very collectible and people really like how it reflects light really well! and how colorful it is.
The White hobnail "Vase" that AdrianeArts did is called an "Epergine". It is a Victorian Piece that is not my husbands but MINE! hehe, anyway these are really interesting too and you don't see complete ones to often. This is one very nice.
Anyway there you go! Now you guys know a little bit more about glass!
