I recently dug up an older camera from a box, the nikon coolpix 990 and heard they can be converted to IR fairly easy and produce some nice results. Is it a camera worth converting is my 1st question and my other question is as follows. My Z1015 can photo the IR light on a remote (tested in complete darkness) now to get started in IR photos with that one would need a RED filter and black and white setting? This is my main question because from what I'm reading ppl are taking out IR blocking filters and converting cams and others talk about not having to convert and blah blah...I have a great intrest in IR film and am almost to the point of loading up my old 35mm minolta and slapping a red filter on it. Would rather use digital as it is more cost effective. Welp thanks for reading and I hope I posted in the right forum.

a red filter yes, but you don't necessarily need it on B&W setting as you can get some really neat colour IR in some situations.
I know Rich had his 990 converted, try dropping him a PM if he does not get in here.

I believe the main advantage to convertign your camera is that the camera is now not filtering most of the IF light coming to your camera making exposures alot faster. If your doing a landscape using a tripod is simple enough to combat a longer exposure with a IF Filter but doing people and not have them sway or blink or move in a 20 second exposure is alot mroe challenging.
