View Full Version : Painting as Exercise!

This is for everyone who has friends and relatives who are always telling them..."you need to get out of that studio and get some exercise!" Now you have something to tell them in return!
>Watching paint dry can be a very exhaustive exercise.
>
>You have to RUN out and buy the paint.
>You have to STIR it (be careful of the bubble factor) when mixing in medium.
>You have to DIP a brush into the paint and WIPE the excess off.
>You have to use VIGOROUS arm and wrist MOTIONS to BRUSH it on.
>You need to STEP backwards and forwards and sideways to ADMIRE/CONSIDER your work.
>You need to CAREFULLY INSPECT the paint to see if it has begun to dry
>(and see what color it is now, because it sure isn't what you thought
>you were putting on) and then begin again with the next layer!!!!
Exhausted yet?

I constantly drop my paint rag & after bending over to pick it up so much i started to notice that my tummy was becomming very flat & firm. In order to keep it in proportion with my thighs & butt i decided to start picking it up with my toes. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Since i've just realized that i've become a Lord of the Arts i can do anything i darn well please! That's why I take a nap around 3PM!!!
And I have always said..I am allergic to exercise...boy have I been fibbing through me teeth!!!
Thanks for a great giggle Carly....

LOL. If you stand and swing a big brush, it surely is exercise.

Don't forget those wonderful "eye" exercises. Constantly moving from image, paint, canvas, image, paint, canvas - whew! I'm tired!

Watercolorists have all those trips to the sink to replace our water. But of course that is where the tea pot is kept, well we must have our breaks from the strenuous activity,

How in the world did I miss this post for so many days. I knew there was another reason I needed to get back to painting. Thanks Carly for the funny.

Okay, you know how those instructors are always adding new "moves" to the routine. Just thought of these today...

>(and see what color it is now, because it sure isn't what you thought
>you were putting on) and then begin again with the next layer!!!!
>now you grab the digital camera firmly in both hands..
>focus and take photo of your painting
>hop back to the computer
>resize that file and export, upload to WetCanvas critique forum
>hop on back to the studio...paint....paint...
>return to computer...check critique messages
>hop on back to the studio...change the painting...paint....paint...
>return to computer...check critique messages..
>hop on back to the studio...change the....
>Repeat move several hundred times for greatest benefits!

Should we paint sometimes with our left hand and sometimes with out right so we don't become disproportioned?
And maybe do the same with our mouse?

The name of this topic made me think of a cute story.
When I was a student, one of my instructors used to talk about the exercise she got from painting. The workout of her arms of course.
She said, it's very tiring every day to hold your right arm up for hours at a time. It has to flex, contract, and more to place your paint on the canvas. Do this every day and you get muscles in your arm.
She said to me, feel my arm while I'm painting. I did, and I could definitely feel the muscles contracting and working to hold her arm up.
The legs don't get much of a workout, but that arm did.
Sincerely,
Ethan Semmel

I thought this forum was pretty funny...till I started on this mural! Now, after about 4 hours a day, I feel the BURN!! Ouch. I'm hurting in places I did not know I had. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/eek.gif

Gisela....it's true the larger the painting the more exercise you will get. The last stage setting I painted was such a great workout that I lost ten pounds....but most of that was from chasing the goats out of the barn where the panels were all set up for me to work on...lol

i get a great workout leaning over my table then straightening up, leaning, straightening. and don't forget the hand exercises i get snipping. oh and the channel changing on the tv or turning around to answer the phone or getting up to get more paper and the most exercise is walking into the kitchen to refuel.

you guys are painting some hilarious mental pictures! I'm sooo clumsy that i am always dropping my brushes. I get my exercise picking them up but in the interest of keeping Phil (my very patient husband) in good shape as well, i have been known to actually call him from across the entire house to come in & pick them up for me! I can't believe he does this. & he does it with a smile!! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Cheryl

Cheryl....you could start an entire new topic on "How to keep your Mate in Shape while you Paint"....
My husband does lift his head from the sofa cushion when I asked him to look at a painting....but its usually to say something like, "Can't you hold it higher so I won't have to move?" lol...

Don't forget those wrist exercises...constantly putting brush in water...shake, shake, shake...or in my case chasing after the kittens trying to steal my squirrel hair brush!!
Carly...don't forget about using the fingers for all the typing and clicking of the mouse...

You guys are funny, funny http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif. But my main exercise is for my back which hurts after I paint for awhile - I'm tensing up and not realizing it. But this thread is exercising the best muscles - smile ones!

What a wonderful addition to Carly's exercise routine….
Can I get the tape of this...and maybe you send me your Photo so I can hang it on my wall? Or maybe just send your massage therapist over for a month or so? (whisper....just a sneaky way of getting the coveted photo we all are holding our breath for.) ....When can we exhale, Bruin?

Painting sure gives you a lot of exercise. I know this, my studio is a mess and I run around to find my art supplies, better get it organized. I love oreo cookies with milk.

Animal--methinks the calories in the cookies and milk are NOT cancelled out by the exercise of lifting them to your mouth!!! I know--I have lots of experience in cookies--that's why I look this way!!!
