View Full Version : Made my first star murrine
This is from a bronze mold from Frantz, only $20. Easy to make.

That's KEWL Betty...can you explain the process for us newbies?
Harold, you're a newbie??
As you requested, *Star Murrine 101*
-Started with a rather large gather of black and then plunged it into the mold
-I then laid down white between each point, making sure that I pushed it down pretty well to avoid trapping air. Of course, I had to make sure that my black was rather cool so that I wouldn't distort it when applying white.
-Once I laid down the white between the points, I then covered the rest of the star with white.
-Next I attached a clear rod to use as a punty and also encased the end of the star so that when I pulled, I would not distort the star.
-Made sure that the whole star was heated pretty well to even out the white and then pulled like a stringer, making sure not to twist the black or clear rods.
**VOILA** star murrine! I wound up with an approximate 4" section. Not very good at pulling so consequently, I have many different sized murrine.
Hope this does not detract from or effect the Steinert group mold purchase. Sorry, Laura. I had been looking at these molds from Frantz for the last couple of months and decided to give it a shot. At $20 each, they seem to be a pretty good deal. I'm going to order a heart mold next time I place a glass order.

Lets see Ann...could it have anything to do with that sweet new grandchild? ;-)
Renee, I cut them with my rod nippers.

Bump
Good ideas just keep coming back.
Another way to make stars is to pound five finishing nails in a chunk of wood. Flare them out at the top. Plunge your core color in there, then encase as usual.
