Meant to add this about brochures and forgot...

I make up a simple brochure with..name, phone #, e-mail address, website addy, and city/state location. I usually put the gallery name and address and phone # where the paintings and brochures are to be seen.

I like to include a pic of a painting that is most representational of the things I will show in the gallery..its title, size and medium.

I don't put prices on my brochures that will be in the gallery...they can look at the paintings for that.

On one side I put a small pic of myself with a brief bio and artist's statement about my work.

I like to do this in triplicate on 8 1/2 x 11, getting three flat brochures from one piece of card stock. This I have found is the most professional look from my home printer!

Check out other artist's brochures and see what would work the best with your printer.

But if you do decide to get something printed up...e-mail me and I will check with Anita Stewart who told me about the company she uses...her postcards (which looked wonderful) were done for 5 cents each.

everyone for the congratulations and the excellent advice on the brochure.

This is a gallery and frame shop that has 3 stores in south eastern MI. The do a lot of work for corporations and sell a lot of art.

I will find out the details about pricing and commission tomorrow probably but we talked and will charge probably about $500 including the frame. This piece was 22"x22".

I went to two of the shops to meet with both managers. One shop said my work was very nice but too contemporary! They sell traditional work. So she sent me to the other shop where the manager likes contemporary (so now I know that I am contemporary!).

They are going to put it right in the front window! And will pass out brochures for me to customers and people who want commisions.

Congratulations Cindy!!
I guess you've answered your own question on 'how do you know when you're ready to sell your art?' http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

Cindy: Usually the gallery that you are working with sets the percentages when they take your work, but I understand that you are negotating. Find out what the other artist are doing and follow their lead.

About the brochure: Keep it simple. Put your name in Bold letters to announce your work and then add a pic of one of your favorite pieces as an example of what you do. Add your address, phone and e mail

Depending on how you plan to fold your brochure, add additional examples of your work on the inside with more information like size, medium and availability and price.

On the back side, place a picture of yourself with a short bio or relative information concerning the gallery that is representing you along with contact information.

This should do it, along with a business card. Congratutions...!!!!!

Way to GO!!! Congratulations!!! and all that good stuff!!!

The gallery I was in took 30% (but it was a small local gallery without a lot of overhead expenses and the artists there provided their own open house refreshments, etc.) The antique shop that carries a few of my paintings wanted 40%...but I told them no...I could only do 30%, and they agreed.

However, most of the galleries I have talked with in Atlanta get 50% of selling price. So locality, overhead and representation have a lot to do with percentage.

One suggestion I had from another artist was to agree to 50% on the first three to five paintings sold and 40% thereafter. But make that agreement up front with the gallery.

If an agent were trying to get you into a gallery...I would think they would want the best deal possible for the artist!

I am not surprised. I think your collages are very saleable. Especially the last two pieces, your style is coming together and you are improving with each painting.

wait a minute!!! cindy, you mean to say you didn't straighten all that out in the beginning!!!

#1: don't sign anything. if you can't trust them and they can't trust you,,,,what's the point.....{M}

{M} -

We didn't sign anything and I left them with the painting. I trust them. The manager and I discussed the price (we agreed 4 something, maybe $500) and % shop (24-30%) take but she needs to confirm it with the owner first.
