Malarky,
I found a reference to "local color" pertaining to literature but I think the definition is valid for painting as well.
Local color or regional literature is fiction and poetry that focuses on the characters, dialect, customs, topography, and other features particular to a specific region.

It was a question brought up in the chat forum. What does "local color" mean. Pertaining to painting.

Isn't it the actual color of the object being painted????? Not the shadow color, not the highlight color, but the real color. Example: the apple is red, shadow is blue, highlight is yellow. Red is the local color.
I think--could be wrong.

That was the debate. You could be right!

Yes, local colour is the colour something is. For example, have a look at the Degas at http://sunsite.org.uk/cgfa/degas/p-degas7.htm . See that green ribbon hanging from the hat? You'll notice that the hat is modelled with light and shade but the ribbon is not. That's pure local colour exploited for visual impact.

Malarky said it was in all her old art books. My answer was about literature and I made an assumption that it applied to art.
Could be a dual purpose phrase.

Thanks y'all, it sort of makes sense when you look at it as the red apple :0 I have 30 books none newer than 1950. Between them and WetCanvas I'm getting quite an education. Sandy

the literature reference is similiar to painting. local color is the isolated color of an object. the local color of some red ball is THAT red,,,not any ambient, reflective color that finds its way into that red......{M}
