A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Puzzle Piece Project
Project Leader: christyart
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 7
Maximum participants allowed: 12

Description:

A reference has been divided into 12 individual pieces. Twelve participants will each receive one piece of the puzzle to paint in pastel. Please keep your painting small, no more than 6" x 6", and only paint what you see. PM me if you want to participate and I will PM a puzzle piece to you, along with a number. When all pieces have been finished and submitted to the project system as a finished piece, along with the number of the piece, the pieces will be put back together to see the final painting, along with the reference.

<br>

This project begins November 1, 2008 and ends November 30, 2008. You have the first week of November to decide if you want to participate. If there aren't 12 participants, those who do participate may request a second piece of the puzzle to paint. If there are more than 12 participant interested, I can add an additional reference. This is a fun project. Looking forward to your participation!!<br>

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=1212)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Christy - this looks like great fun! If you are a newbie and need some help with this, please ask a Guide or one of us Mods.

Hi Christy, I just need more info... I sent you a pm. :)

This is going to be so great. I might have been the first signup, I read this and bounced right to PM you.

My friend Lisa who comes over on Thursday nights to paint did something like this with her Sunday art group. They cut up a reference and everyone did part of it, then they put all the pieces back together to see how it looked as a whole.

I can't wait to see my piece of the puzzle, and it's going to be fun to work on this and try to match the side proportions as exactly as I can. I would think that would seriously help with putting everything together -- edging carefully.

Allright! Robert and Rose are the first two participants!! And yes, Robert, you were the first! Need ten more people.....who's next???? :D
Have fun and you have the whole month to work on this, so no pressure!!

Just a side note. If you PM and I haven't responded during the day, I'm at work. I have to work this weekend yet, have Monday off and then have an overtime week coming up. So I probably won't be responding until each evening. Thanks for your patience!!

Christine - they have to register on the Project page in order to participate - you can check for your number of participants there.

Also, when they get their pieces done, they have to upload it in the Project gallery - found on the same Project page at the bottom.

They do NOT load images here - the Project gallery will be available for the participants to comment and will show each piece as it is done.

The links are at the bottom of the Project page.

Yes, I was so excited to do one of these again that I took advantage of it the moment it came up. I have a sneaky suspicion of what my piece is part of, though I might be completely wrong. I had no clue in the water/boat one I did a couple of years ago.

I've got a big question on size:

You say that it should be no more than 6"x6"... That's a square and the image I have is a rectangle. Do you mean the longest side should be no more than 6"? I'm ready to put it in Photoshop and print out a really good color copy so I can start dusting off my dusty pastels...

Diane

CM Neidhofer
11-01-2008, 08:57 AM
No, 6" x 6" is kind of arbitrary. I had to kind of eyeball the pieces when I cut up the reference. I just don't want anything any bigger so that if I have to adjust any pieces I won't lose any of the image.

Kathryn Wilson
11-01-2008, 09:01 AM
May I suggest that you can work in a square format as large as you are comfortable with, but in a photo manipulation program you can downsize it to 6 x 6 easily and upload that version.

If you work in a shape other than a square, then something will be lost in translation.

CM Neidhofer
11-01-2008, 09:21 AM
Okay....six pieces of the puzzle already taken! (Robert, you need to get in and sign up for the project!) Need just six more.....who's next???!!

If you work in a shape other than a square, then something will be lost in translation.I understand... it's just that my piece is a rectangle and if I size it to 6x6 it will become distorted...

Diane

yes same with me my size is 13x14,6cm ( 5,2x 5,9 inch)
i already started on it

robertsloan2

I just got your PM and signed in. The puzzle official link is neat!

I asked about proportion vs. 6 x 6" squares in PM, Diane, and measured and scaled my piece. She said doing it proportional was good. Mine proportioned to 5 3/4" wide by 4 1/2" tall, so measuring the proportions in relation to itself to get all the darks going off the correct edge at the right place would take careful measuring. Which is how I'm doing it before I draw any of it -- work in from matching the edges.

But maybe some pieces are squares and others are rectangles. I don't assume that my piece is exactly the same shape as other pieces. There might be a couple of others that say had the same height or width from where they are in a grid but it makes more sense to try and keep the proportions and keep it under 6" so that it fits with its neighbors without too much fiddling.

It would create distortion to turn a square into a rectangle.

Diane Cutter
11-01-2008, 12:39 PM
Got it... Thanks! I'll go for proportional and no more than 6" on the longest side. Much appreciated!

Okay, need just two more participants! If there are more interested after the last two spots, I can add another reference and we'll do a second painting. Let me know!!

Just PM'd your puzzle piece Jan. One spot left....who's got it??!!!:confused:

Christine

IrishRose
11-02-2008, 08:15 AM
If nobody contacted you on the last spot, I'll take it Christy!

Also, not to be be stupid here (okay, maybe I am a little on this!)... how to get a piece into proportion?? Help! :)

CM Neidhofer
11-02-2008, 09:02 AM
Maybe Kathryn can help us on that one, Rose. I thought I had a program that would let me divide the reference equally, but I couldn't figure out how to do it with the programs I have. So I basically had to eyeball the pieces I cropped and saved individually. If anyone can enlighten me as to how I might have done this any easier, PLEASE let me know?!! lol I may need someone's help (knowledge) in piecing it all back together. Best laid plans, ya know.....! :o

Christine

CM Neidhofer

Thanks Christine.. I think I can eyeball it and just paint what I see like you said ... and I'd be interested in another puzzle!!! :) YAY!

Thanks for the nice comments on my apples!
It was difficult to make the apples smooth on the colourfix primer,
(in this small scale)
better paint it on Canson next time.

Nadia: Wow so realistic, I really like it. Always wonder how you do that.

Helen: I love the colors, the pumpkin is glowing!

robertsloan2

Kathy, I think since she is using digital images to put together all our entries that it should be possible to adjust it yourself.

Cut a 6" square piece of paper and put it on your scanner. Scan it. Look at the numbers for the dimensions. Then use Gimp to open the file for your art. (I know Gimp, not Photoshop or the rest, http://www.gimp.org is a free download art and photo program).

Do a Save As and call it reduced or something. Then using the drop down menus on the image itself go for Image > Scale Image. Fill in the 6" number on the vertical proportion. It will automatically scale the horizontal to match it and your scan will be the same as the ones being put together from smaller artworks.

Come to think of it...

What DPI of scan should I post for putting these together? 150dpi, 100dpi, 300dpi? If you give a longest-side image size in pixels we could all coordinate and get our pieces exactly the same height for you and it'd be a lot easier to put together -- no matter what size the physical artwork is.

My reference, BTW, is a nightmare mostly in muted neutrals with a lot of fiddly details in it. I'm probably going to have to use Nupastels or pastel pencils to get it right, or both. But I am getting Wallis today!

Hi Potoma. This is lovely! But you have to submit it on the project page. Go to the actual sign up link for the project and look toward the bottom for a link called Gallery Exhibit (Finished Works). Click on that and then upload your piece. That way the comments about our work stay within that thread and aren't scattered all over. And it provides a link to the project when you make comments in the thread. Thanks!

My support was white Wallis Museum. I always tone it with an acrylic wash--I hate working on white--but this time I didn't bother, and it was okay.

Do we still need someone to do the last piece, or did that spot get filled? If not, I'll do it. Just let me know, Christine. For some reason, I just love these puzzles :D

Last pieces for both projects have been given out! Happy painting to all and we'll see what we come up with at the end of the month/first part of December. Thanks to all who participated and I'm looking forward to seeing all the finished pieces.

Hi everyone. Just checking in to see how everyone is doing with their puzzle piece. I know it's a rough week. Hoping to see the rest of the pieces completed by the end of the month though. There's still one piece available. I thought I would do it if no one else signs up, but I have to work Thursday through Sunday, so not sure I'll have the time either. At the very least, we'll fill in the missing piece with the actual piece of the puzzle.

I'll do it, Christine. I thought you'd said you had it filled, or I would have done it sooner. Just PM it to me and I'll do it this evening.

Thanks, Kim. I think it was filled at the time we talked about it. A couple of people have to withdraw though. I'm wondering if you have to sign up again....if you can....anyway, I'll send you the last piece. Thanks!!

I had no idea there was a thread about this! *palmface* I am still new to this site but was so excited to start a project that I was like... YEA LETS DO IT. I noticed most people are doing their peices on a large scale... My piece is actually on a small scale, probably about 3x3in. Still working on it!

Small is fine. Last time I did a piece for a puzzle, it was about 3 x 3.

Everyone is doing a GREAT job!!! We still have three pieces out. A couple of late issues due to unforeseen circumstances. I don't want to rush anyone either. I'm just eager to wrap this one up so we can put all the pieces back together!! Let me know if you're having any problems finishing. Thanks!

Okay....I didn't want to do this yet, but I couldn't resist either!! As you can see, you've all done FANTASTIC work here!!!! This is kind of a haphazard piecing together since I'm still learning how to do this, but it's pretty darn close and all of you rock!!! Almost perfect match ups on the edges....just amazing!!! Just waiting for the three of you out there yet....no pressure....lol :p I'll do a better piece job when all the pieces are in. :o

Hi everyone. I'm having internet problems here at the house. I'm intermittant at best right now. Hopefully all will be resolved by next weekend. Give me this week, everyone try to get their pieces done on both projects and hopefully by next weekend I can put up the finished puzzles. I'm more than a little put out with the phone company right now. I'm paying for high speed internet and all I get is lost connections and verrry slow connections. "They're working on it," of course. :( I'm glad you've all enjoyed this. I'm trying to get to the projects now to see if pieces are posted, but again, I'm running really slow and I've been up since 4 a.m. for work and I'm tired and aggravated!!! lol:p Bear with me, I'll be on top of it all again in a few days.

Sorry you are having so much trouble. I'll hold my anticipation in check and try not to pepper you with emails. It must be really frustrating to deal with what is happening and I want you to know I think we all appreciate very much the effort you are putting into this.

You guys all ROCK!!!! This turned out just amazing!!!   The "offs" aren't necessarily anything you did. Remember, I didn't have a clue what I was doing when I started this and some of the pieces were odd sized to begin with. I've figured it out since then and project #2 should look much better!! Just the one piece missing yet....yooo hoooo!!! lol I'll leave this up as is until early next week, waiting for that missing piece. If we don't have it by then, I'll insert the piece from the original ref so we can see the finished work and wrap up this project. Give yourselves a round of applause!!   Awesome!! http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-Dec-2008/40633-Puzzle_Piece_Project_1_one_missing.jpg

I've been out of touch for a couple of days and just saw the finished piece.....it looks great and was a lot of fun! I can't do anything until after the first of the year, but I'd love to do another one. Can you tell me where I would fine the invitation? I've totally lost my memory of where I saw it. Great job everyone....And to our leader: thanks for doing all the work!
