I haven't tried this idea yet, but it sounds really good. Take a piece of fabric of the texture that you want (polyester works well). Stretch the fabric over a frame and tack it down, then give it several light coats of Acrylic gesso, sanding between each coat. then take a damp sponge or cloth and hang it over the back of the canvas. This will work somewhat like a staywet palette and your acrylics will remain workable for hours. (Be sure to keep the cloth or sponge damp.)

I don't believe the moisture would penetrate several coats of gesso. But it wouldn't hurt to try. Let us know how it works, although the quick drying time is what I like about acrylics.
