I meant to post these at the end of last month so I'm taking the liberty of sneaking them in here. They were all done as quickies of 90-120 minutes with pastel pencils and soft pastel on various surfaces

Thank you for your comments Dana. Not sure about knack though, determination would be a better description lol. Still a way to go yet but little by little things are starting to come together. I have to say it's due in a large part to this site and the great works posted here along with the generosity of fellow artists for their critiques, advice and encouragement.

Here are two watercolors I finished this past week. The boy was done in a 3-hour sitting at our local weekly portrait group. The adopted Chinese girl visited our house with her father about 6 weeks ago. Her name is Ella.

Hi all: Hope everyone is having a beautiful Fall season!

I completed the little 8"x10" sample portrait of my daughter, for the scheduled May 09 Portrait Demo in Acrylics here. It could use some increase in highlights but I'll leave that for then. Her nose could turn up a bit more at it's end, visually.

Hi! It's been quite a while since I've been on here.
You've all been quite busy this month!
Wassie - nice strong character you've caught!
Becca - lovely! You certainly have made amazing progress in your painting since you started posting on here -- this is so strong!
Gary - You sure are prolific. That SP is strong and kind of haunting.
picksbugs - nice colour & you have a good likeness of D. Crosby.
Gayle - Charming!
WC Lee - very nice! I love the softness!
Brighteyes - This is a very strong portrait & I find your use of texture quite compelling. It's modelling paste?
unseeded - Both lovely watercolour portraits!
Jocelyn - Lovely work, as always!

I hope to post something soon. Great work, all!

Cheers, Lauren

BrightEyes -- this latest one is fascinating! Very cool!

At my weekly portrait workshop, we have two wonderful models -- so hard to choose!
I am doing Franza, and here is what I did my first week.

In monochrome oils, on a very small canvas --
after less than an hour:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Oct-2008/20772-Franwip1.jpg
At the end of last week's session -- about 2 hours:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Oct-2008/20772-Franwip2.jpg

After getting the reference photos I took of Franza at last Wednesday's session printed, I see some things that are off. I'll have one more session with her this Wednesday, and will post up what I do then later in the week.

C's & C's welcome!

Cheers, Lauren

Gotta love that hair on Franza eh Lauren!? Looking good.
Tried a monochrome study on canvas paper a couple weeks ago at the life drawing sessions too and I will try again this week.
Bright Eyes, give it a try, all it is is concentrating on values and colour is not a concern. It is a great first step in portraiture development for artists, before tackling full colour.
W.C. Lee, that portrait is very well done.

Lovely portrait, WC!

Yes, Joss, Franza has amazing hair. I haven't really captured the wonderful-ness of it, or the expression in her eyes, but I aim to do so this Wednesday.

I decided to move from doing charcoal studies to monochrome oil studies at the portraiture workshop (though I still do charcoal drawings there sometimes), as I'm working on learning how to paint in oils. Did work in oils many years ago at artschool, but then switched to acrylics. I now realize how little instruction I got on oils, and how little understanding I had of the study of values, colour-mixing etc.

The trouble is, the more you learn, the more you find that there is to learn! :wink2:

Cheers!

Joss, I didn't think you could improve upon the earlier image but you certainly have. She's beautiful. Just one tiny nit and ignore if you like: I'd tone down the rise of her breasts somewhat. Her face looks too young for what's displayed here and well, it's somehow distracting from that gorgeous face.

jocelynsart
10-13-2008, 11:37 AM
True Dana, I know, I had tried to minimize the area a lot and did, but the added highlights helped to bring focus back a bit. Going back in and receding that area again will help. I was a bit disappointed I had to crop the portrait so much for the painting but it was just the top she happened to have on due to just being in the house and the way she was sitting sort of out from her chair too. I had to beg her to even get a shot, as rarely is her hair out and the light was so nice. She hates her hair. Unfortunately, she looks a lot older than she is, as I also did at her age.
Thanks for the help; Joss

PS: Lauren, your last line is So very true!!!

Here's a peek at what I'm working on this month. I've always wanted to do a roman bust, and had a friend at work who reminded me a bit of Caesar, so asked him to model for this one.

Here is my offering. Not sure if its finished yet and its a bit brighter and yellower than the photo.

Heidi, what a great idea to do a Roman bust of a friend. There might be a good market for those, don't you think?

Here's today's copy of a Fayum funeral portrait, oil on linen, 16"X12". The original is about 1800 years old and was done in encaustic.

Heidi -- that bust is wonderful!!  Will you be firing the finished clay bust or making a mold and casting it?

Tina -- That is a lovely head of the young man. Is it in pastel? What I do find confusing is the fact that he has no body -- it just is distracting for me.

Lawrence -- I love those Fayum funeral portraits in encaustic (I have a book of them), and I think you've done a great job on this. :D

I did have another (last) session with Franza and think I've finished that portrait study. Will post it up when it's downloaded from my camera.

Thanks for the nice comments you guys!
August, the photo is very dark on my machine, but from what I can see, the eyes are really beautiful and kind.
I'll second that Lawrence - great job on your fayum replica.
Lauren, this one is modeled in plasteline, so can't fire it. Will be making a mold and offering up copies though. Most of the stuff I do is by commission, so don't have much of anything I can just make copies of and sell outright. Trying to do more of that, and less commissions (they are exhausting).

Jocelyn- your daughter looks amazing! She looks very happy and playful!

Heidi- that bust is amazing! The folds of cloth look so relaxed and natural. Its hard to believe they are stiff clay.

Gary- the man in the hood is just flat out creepy! I think you made him just as, if not more, evil than he was in the movie!

August- very nice! I bet your son loves this one! There is so much depth and expression in the eyes!

Lawrence- the Fayum looks great! The whole concept of encaustics still baffles me.

Pascur- This looks just amazing! So happy and breezy!

pascur -- Very nice portrait -- amazing blue eyes and that smile! I like the softness in how you handled the medium (what is it?) but find the definition of the cheek by the nostrils and dimples a bit too defined, as the rest is so soft. Also, the lower part of her face (jawline) is a bit lopsided. However, the expression is so strong! She looks like a very friendly and fun lady!

I am truly always extremely amazed at what talented and amazing sculptors can do. I had the opportunity to model for a sculpting class a while back and I could not believe the work I saw, by one quite young student. Way more accomplished then anything I'd ever seen in any of the painting classes, even at my own college. I know I'd never be able to work 3 dimensionally like the work I was seeing. I was seeing the start and I could not even fathom myself doing it and more than a grade 3 level lol! Your work is just amazing to me.

Donna Rose- this is great! Isn't it nice to have a whole slew of artists to help out whenever needed?

Jeansanger- I agree with LG, this does look finished. It looks wonderful! Very good contrast and movement along with great emotional depth!
