I was reading djstars post on doing a portrit. When doing the sketch she used charcol. It has been a long time since I used charcol. Must you use it often when doing a sketch before applying pastel? I use pastel pencils

There isn't any "must use" that I'm aware of. If you want to use charcoal to sketch it out, make sure you're using vine rather than compressed or charcoal pencil and you'll probably want to fix it to keep the charcoal from mixing with the pastel.

Becky...Ive tried a number of different things from vine charcoal to regular charcoal to pastel pencils and the harder nupastels.
I've also done complete tonal underdrawings using charcoal and then begin applying my pastel on top of that. I also, oftentimes, just go with the flow and not do any sketching at all.
It really is just a matter of experimentation and seeing what you like.
