View Full Version : The Day Shift

My husband has been a firefighter with the city for almost 18 years and I was excited when this picture of him appeared in our local paper last winter and I knew one day I would have to attempt to paint it.
Well that day came and this is my attempt :)
12x14 in. canvas

Thanks to all of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day for our safety.... how proud you must be of your fireman. Nothing we can say can surpass your husband taking it to work with him to show off to the guys! Now that is one fine recommendation. Lovely painting and it shows your heart was in it. Great going.
09-26-2008, 09:44 AM
Really nice, a beautiful painting :)
09-26-2008, 10:14 AM

Great painting, and don't you just love that he's taking it in to show off to the boys. You may be looking at a long list of requests because they are all going to want a portrait in their gear too.
09-26-2008, 11:08 AM
I think it would be tough to give away that painting! I bet your hubby was bursting with pride when he showed it off at the hall. (And the guys wanted to keep it at the hall!)
09-26-2008, 11:21 AM
Yeah, I don't think I could part with this one.... it's fantastic! I love how the hat looks, and those flames... just wow!
09-26-2008, 01:12 PM
Aires, you so eloquently put into words my feelings! Thank you for that.
Thank you Arlene!
Andy, thank you!
Jocelyn, my hope for your husband also! Thank you!
Thank you Ruthie!
Sharon, Well he showed it not only to his crew (men and women ;) ) but also to the crew before him and the one coming on this morning. :o . At least if they all had their B.A.'s on it would be easy to get a good likeness  Thank you!
Antony, the Deputy Chief said that they would pay to frame it if I let them hang it up in the fire station, and also said he had some other photos that he would like painted! I'm not sure what I'm going to do!
Thank you so much Katwyld!
09-26-2008, 01:35 PM
Could always do another one....
09-26-2008, 04:53 PM
Beautiful work, the colors are so expressive! Great job.
09-26-2008, 04:56 PM
This is amazing!
09-26-2008, 05:27 PM
What are you going to do with requests to paint more? Get paintin', gal!
Wow, I'd consider that the best of compliments - if you put your heart into other paintings for the walls of the old firehouse, I KNOW they will do you proud and make life a little more enjoyable for the men who spend so many hours in the fire station.
-- I used to work in city offices where the fire station for the downstown district was overhead and the walls pretty thin. We all had tingles down our spine when the alarm sounded and we heard the drumbeat of feet as they ran overhead and slid down the pole to the basement area where the fire truck was housed. The hours of regular duty for our firemen could be long but when that alarm sounded, we all knew that lives were on the line, both for the firemen and at the destination where they were headed. So - my hat is off to you both in the lovely painting you did for your husband and in anything you might do in the future to make the long hours a little brighter for our brave firefighters, any city.
(Maybe you could loan them your painting for a designated time OR just do another one for them??)

Thank you Robert! That is what my husband said when I mentioned I wasn't ready to part with it
Thank you Assaf for the kind comments!
Bright Eyes, thank you!
Aires, I'm not sure about giving them this painting yet but I will look at the photos the Deputy Chief has in mind and maybe paint a couple over winter to give to them. I like your idea about loaning them for a specific time period (maybe until my husband retires?) I wasn't looking for comissions but my husband thinks I should do it, and it is an honour to be asked!
Thank you Clem!
Michael, I appreciate it! Thank you!

 Hi Lillian!
I love that this could be any firefighter, but yet, it has special meaning because it is YOUR fireman. It is very well painted too, I might add! The figure is excellently done and so is the fire!
How wonderful that you might be getting some other work from this! Painting another, or more, would be a good way to keep everyone who loves the painting happy!
Congratulations on this one. It's very special!
