View Full Version : Mississippi Sunset...

I started this while outside, about week or so ago...it is not really a plein air, as I was working from a photo I took early this summer....just had to be outside cause the manchild was out. Unfortunatly it started to rain, and ended the session. I thought I would try to finish it up today, or at least get closer. :)
C&C is welcome. I do know that I wish I could get a handle on the darkening...:O Somehow I have trouble painting lighter than I want it. So it is already a bit darker than I intended it to be. I cannot get the blue right either...but it is about the best I can do without throwing the other colors way off.
Thanks for looking!

I think it is wonderful.
The darker blues really make this work, and the sun fading below the horizon is really pleasing.
Personally, if it was me, I would carry the left side horizon/sky over to the right of the painting, while eliminating the darker clouds clusters to the right of the tree, the left side of the tree reads truer to me.
The colours are fabulous, and whatever you do, it is wonderful Susan.

I like this very much! The deep colors define the time of day perfectly!

Kathleen, I see what you mean. Even though I tried to go by the ref...when I compare, I am painting at a whole different angle as usual... Tho' this time I just painted without sketching it first. Here are the two pics I took...
Each one right after the other, one standing in the truck, and the other from in front of it. I liked the darker one better....:)
However, I think this is like so many other things...the reality is not always what you should paint. :o Thank you! I'm glad you pointed that out. I also think I am gonna try to angle that side more in the middle, as in the ref.

This has great color and atmosphere. You also captured a sense of the wide open space. The lighter and darker blues in the sky really react well together and makes the sky pulsate. Feels like dusk to me. Good Job.

I like the sky as it is. One suggestion I have is since you have lights on the tops of the trees, the tree line doesn’t stop the sun. So let some of the light spill over onto the grass. See your 2nd photo.

Looks intense, large sky adds a lot to the painting.
